They want to stop something that isn't happening at all?

Its not hapenning on "PSN" per say cause they don't let you change your user names. But its easy to see stuff like that happen on other online communities. You don't actually have to go in and screw up first to learn a lesson you already know.

OT: Just charge $10/$20 per name change and limit the changes to once per year. Problem solved.

Not sure what online communites its happening on since Xbox Live charges $10 to change it and if someone's a troll you report the person's Xbox Live account no matter what his Gamertag is. Is it a big problem on Steam?

But the thing is Sony's saying "We want to stop that" as if other gaming communities don't have the perameters already in play. If Xbox Live has been allowing username changes with certain restrictions for almost 10 years why can't Sony get the same thing done while making money in the process?

Well wouldn't it be simple to place a minimum time (6 months or a year) between name changes to stop the trolls from doing what they are trying to prevent?

I think Sony's missing a golden opportunity. Charge like $5 for people to change their name, and 1) they'll be making millions just off the many casuals who constantly change their name because they really don't care about a single profile ID, and 2) it'll keep the PSN a lot less choked up with people who go out of their way to make new accounts, and they begin the process of deleting all those unused ghost accounts noone cares about.

Sony really needs to learn from MS about making money. The could have made billions if they started charging for online on the PS3 but they didn't . I'm not sure why they are so slow to make changes.

To be fair, it was a blessing they didn't charge for online last gen, because of all the features we were missing. PS3 wasn't made with online connectivity as a priority, so it's good that what we got was free. I just hope Sony continues to make financially smart decisions with PS4.

They forget that Microsoft used name changing to their advantage by charging people 800 MS points to make the change. Yeah, it's still open to griefers, but I sincerely doubt there are many people willing to spend 10 bucks every time they want to piss someone off in a video game.

You'd be surprised. :P

well sony would need to start to be willing screwing over their cosutmers lots to do the same as MS. a simple look at the DRM fiasco last year shows how MS wanting to treat their costumers.

Well they are still doing quite a lot wrong on the PSN, my brother still has a junior account because he set it up when he was under age

I craftily realised what issues this would cause and put in one of my parents' birthdates. So that does mean I'm going to be stuck forever being 30 years older than I am...

But the other issue is your PSN account is region locked. They need to do something about this, as I don't see why I can't buy a movie (for example) when out the country because they have such annoying region policies

PSN is, however, improving all the time. So hopefully Sony will get around to my issues as well name issues

This is about as believable as devs claiming that 30fps is cinematic.

Why is everybody turning into politicians? It's almost as if the truth is avoided at all cost now, even if the truth isn't actually that bad, or "better" than the lie.

In this case, I reckon the real reason is just that the executive didn't know the answer. People tend to not like saying "I don't know", and this was the first thing that came to his head.

I'd like to know where this firmware is being developed. As my experience as a developer in an international organisation, I find that regions of the world have very different attitudes to this sort of thing. In some parts of the world, they tend to like having a roadmap planned way, way into the future and any deviations from the roadmap is met with huge resistance (Asia). Others are happy to move things around at leisure (USA / Europe).

Many Western teams and organisations have moved over to agile methodology, while Asian teams and organisations are really trying their hardest to stick with waterfall.

If I was to find out that Xbox's firmware is developed or managed in the West, and Playstation's was done in the East, I would not be surprised, just based on what we see with how they tend to prioritise things and put stuff out.

Really? That's a weak reason. I just wish that I didn't have to delete my original profile, The Sony Girl.
