Well... There is the Wii U. Mass amounts of people have confused it with the Wii, or thought it was just a new gamepad peripheral for the Wii. That's what's in a name.
Third parties have been ignoring Nintendo for a long time. The Gamecube was near the high end of the market for power and it didn't encourage any extra third party support.
I'm amazed people still have this idea that the Wii U isn't a powerful system. In comparison to a PC, it isn't. In comparison to the X1 and PS4 it's not that far behind. In comparison to the PC, the PS4 and X1, aren't powerful either. This is only the second system that has been a "weak console" as you say. There was the Wii, and the Wii U. Before that Nintendo has always been mid range to high end for power.
Gotta figure out how to set these up lol.

I believe that is more an issue of marketing than the name itself. The Xbox One is just as bad as Wii U if not worse as it is using the actual term people had been using for the original Xbox. But they marketed so aggressively that it didn't matter.

Let's face it, NES is the best selling name for Nintendo Home consoles (111 million) to date, and it's the name that started it all for them.
NES is a great name, it is self explanatory, positively nostalgic and doesn't sound like a name a toddler would make up.

It would have mattered more if there wasn't the 360 in between. There is no denying that they dropped the ball on marketing like crazy, but there is certainly an issue with the name. My brother, a Nintendo follower for most of his life, of which he has an extra 10 years than I do legitimately thought it was just a gamepad for the Wii. I follow this kind of stuff much closer than he does now, but he is still a fan even if he is 43 lol. There has only been more brand recognition for the Wii U since the launch of MK 8 really. I'm sure smash will help as well.
Gotta figure out how to set these up lol.
