I really don't trust vgc software sales.
Wii is at 901.41 million units shipped

Including digital and stock on shelves. TBH 880m might even be a bit too high for retail sales

Beast of a console and a beast of a gen in general. Never had multi console gaming been more epic.

360 and PS3 should pass 1b (if not already) software.

Sony has said they would continue support for the PS3 for several years after the PS4 launch and it shows in software sales the last 2+- years

MSFT said the opposite until Mattrick left now they have indicated/shown they will continue support of the xbox 360 - IMO that was a smart decision and paying off

for all 3 companies, most of their previous gen sales are probably high margin and with the built up install bases why not take advantage

I think Nintendo and the Wii u would be doing better had they supported the Wii longer, delayed the Wii u launch until they could support it better too

just add in the title, this: in vgc ;)

Why? Wii definitely isn't on the same digital level as 360. Either way he put it, 360 passed Wii in software sales.

i don t doubt it...but it isn t certain!wii best sellers are quite undertracked!http://www.nintendo.co.jp/ir/en/sales/hard_soft/index.html yeah, i know   this are shipments, but the dicrepancy are big for a console that is near in discontinuation and  for its old games which cannot have 1m+ on the shelves,i.e more than many current games:P !E.g 34.57  vs 35.53m mario kart wii or 27.85m vs 28.65m NSMB wii

So? Hardly a difference.

This is actually a pretty big deal, never before has the market leader been caught in software sales in this manner and this is quite an amazing feat when you consider how large the gap in userbase and hardware sales was between the Wii and the PS3/360 for a long time. It is also worth nothing that about 40% or more of the Wii's software sales is 1st party developed or published, which is also a relevant part of the equation as a whole.

Around January 1st 2009, the Wii had sold a whooping 43.6 million units while the 360 was at approx. 27 million and the PS3 at 19.6 million and this gap actually grew and by January 1st 2010; the Wii had sold 64.6 million, the 360 37.4 and the PS3 was about half of the Wii with 32.85 million lifetime.
Looking at those figures; if someone had said to you at the time that in November 2014 there would be a topic revolving around the fact that the 360 had outsold the Wii in software and the PS3 was right behind (all this even excluding digital), would you have shrugged and figured it was no big deal?

This is a huge deal and a historic turn of events for a console generation, the 7th gen broke all traditions and rules at every turn and this is yet another cog in the strange machinery that is the 7th generation of consoles.

Also; posts like this are not relevant to the topic and add nothing to the discussion, consider this a public warning to everyone in the thread.

Actually there can be a lot of them sitting on shelves since Nintendo is so bad at game pricing. Noone wants to buy a 6 year old game for 30-40 bucks, so they buy it used.

If I remember correctly, Nintendo has the Wii with 900 million units sold.

Maybe I'm mixing things up =S

I think that with digital all 3 console have pass (or will pass) 1,000,000,000...

Unless Nintendo decides to go back and release a few big titles on the Wii, I don t think it will get to 1billion like the other 2 - I don t think the Wii ever had a high level of digital sales - ironically if Nintendo would put the Wii VC library, Wii ware ect on the Wii U e shop I think they would get a tone of sales there Either way all 3 consoles had incredible software sales and all 3 companies have illustrated their own brand of determination when they had to - in order to create mass competition We really need 3 strong consoles for a healthy industry IMO

8th gen games are still being ported to it and they sell rather well. What else would you expect?

Throw digital in and its wayyyyyy ahead.

No question - and PS3 has prob already surpassed it w digital included

Anyone know if either MSFT or Sony have ever published digital sales as a percentage of total sales for last gen consoles?

i read today (again on VgChartz) that 20% of Destinys sales were digtal-  wasn t that a huge file?

I would not be surprised if Xbox and PS3 were at 10% digtal

Probably, but that would only be for games available physically as well. Add in all the digital only games, which both 360 and PS3 had a lot of and you've got a tonne of digital sales.

I added VgChartz to the title to make sure I was creditng the info properly -  I do feel sure both xbox 360 and PS3 have surpassed the Wii in software sales without question when difital is factored-  if Xbox and ps3 are even at 10% digital as % of sales then that another 85-88 million units+- each
