Forums - Gaming - Digital future is slow to transition and digital customers have to suffer.

Why do we accept to pay the same price or pay more if you live in Europe when we know that games should cost less digitally.

So far only Nintendo seem to have gotten it right... they offered the Deluxe digital promotion and games actually go on special pretty quickly on the digital store. I fully expected Sony and Microsoft to follow suite. But, so far change have been really slow and digital sales are few and far between on Xbox one anyways.

You are kidding, right? Nintendo games are more expensive in the eShop than in retail, even taking "Nintendo Network Premium" into account.

  • Mario Kart 8: eShop = €55.20 (€59.99 - €4.80 NNP), Amazon.de = €49.99... I only paid €40 at release at coolshop.de
  • Super Mario 3D World: eShop = €55.20 (€59.99 - €4.80 NNP), Amazon.de = €48.99
  • New Super Mario Bros. U: eShop = €55.20 (€59.99 - €4.80 NNP), Amazon.de = €32.88
  • Wind Waker HD: eShop = €55.20 (€59.99 - €4.80 NNP), Amazon.de = €44.99
  • Hyrule Warriors:  eShop = €45.99 (€49.99 - €4.00 NNP), Amazon.de = €44.99
  • Donkey Kong: Tropical Freeze: eShop = €45.99 (€49.99 - €4.00 NNP), Amazon.de = €37.99
  • Bayonetta 2: eShop = €45.99 (€49.99 - €4.00 NNP), Amazon.de = €44.27
  • Pikmin 3: eShop = €45.99 (€49.99 - €4.00 NNP), Amazon.de = €43.42
  • Nintendo Land: eShop = €55.20 (€59.99 - €4.80 NNP), Amazon.de = €19.95
  • Rayman Legends: eShop = €27.59 (€29.99 - €2.40 NNP), Amazon.de = €19.99

And don't forget that the "Nintendo Network Premium"-promotion is ending in 6 weeks.

The only game you can save a few bucks (due to the ending promotion) is SSB U... when you ignore other shops that are cheaper than Amazon:

  • Super Smash Brothers U: eShop = €55.20 (€59.99 - €4.80 NNP), Amazon.de = €59.99

What's the point of physic games in 2014? Seriously, it takes 2 hours to install the damn thing and then another 2 to download the day 1 DLC patch?

Trading of course! I wanted to play Shadow of Mordor but I don't have unlimited resources, so I can't just buy everything.

A buddy of mine at work had the game and once he finished it he lent it to me. He didn't have TLOU:R so I did the same.

Got home, put SoM in my PS4 and after about 45 seconds of installing it allowed me to boot up the game. Yeah there was a patch, but it must not have been required since I played just fine and the patch downloaded while I played.

iPhone = Great gaming device. Don't agree? Who cares, because you're wrong.

Currently playing:

Final Fantasy VI (iOS), Final Fantasy: Record Keeper (iOS) & Dragon Quest V (iOS)

Got a retro room? Post it here!

What I don't get is why MS doesn't offer digital games at 15-20$ lower price digitally, at least for the 1st party games. They want this transition, so why not push for it?

fair enough. digital game sharing would be nice...

Digital is a long way off being important here in Australia. New games such as GTA, TLoU, Halo etc. will cost $99 digitally at launch. Physical is RRP $99 but you can always find them for $89 at least, more often than not $79 and sometimes even $69. Plus our shitty internet -_-
Yeah I just cant see the value in a digital purchase.

When digital games are around $40 I'll start buying them. Until then I'll keep buying games like GTA V at retail, and trading them in for $40 after I've had them for a year.

This generation I went full digital on PS4 and am enjoying it enormously.
First, I can get my games sooner, no need to go to the store or wait for deliveries, I can get them almost 20% cheaper than retail, no need to take care of my discs or store them, the convenience of playing games by just pressing x, the ability to trade games with friends not living nearby, the ability to resell my games at a better price than retail discs and without additional postage costs.
There are just so many advantages with little or no drawbacks, I just cannot imagine anyone beside avid collectors actually wanting to purchase a disc...

I keep my game consoles. Future is why I buy physical. When services are terminated. Those games can't be recovered when generic hardware failures happen in the future. For you, it doens't matter. You want the speed and the conveniance. I want the longevity of use. Your extra free time will eventually be diverted to purchasing antional HDD's. Or game dl swapping as games get bigger. The things you avoid now, will happen eventually.

Of course, I completely agree. Two completely different types of people. You are a collector, I am a user... I actually go out of my way not to collect anything.

That's why I love digital everything, not only games. Download, use, discard...

EDIT: See you added some stuff. As I said, use and discard. I have a 16GB stick for my film and series downloads, it's usually half empty all the time. No sense of hanging on to downloads, when they are one click and a few minutes away.

The entire world can stream music for all I care. As long as they still sell real albums on vinyl and/or CD, that's the route I'm taking.

What about DVD-A?  DVD-A is technically superior to CD in almost every possible way except for compatibility.  With DVD-A, almost everything is at least 24/48 and 24/96 is pretty common, too.  Then there is the capability of 5.1 surround, which I think sounds fantastic when it's lossless.  I really wish the industry would abandon the CD format in favor of DVD-A.

At any rate, I refuse to support lossy compressed audio formats like MP3 or AAC.  They have their uses, but not as a distribution format IMO (unless we're talking about free downloads).  I think the advent of lossy digital music sales stunted the advancement of the music industry, from a technical point of view.  Sure, hi-res downloads have finally shown up for a few albums here and there, but physical formats could do hi-res 15 years ago.

On the topic of digial distribution of video games, I'm not really a fan of it.  I guess I can't say that I am 100% opposed to it because I have bought a few digital games, but only because they didn't have a physical release.  Currently, I have only bought 3 digital games out of my collection of 1000+ games: Mega Man 9 (Wii), Mega Man 10 (Wii), and Perfect Dark (X360).  As a big Mega Man fan, I just couldn't say no to a new Mega Man game, even though it really bugged me that they were digital only.  Same thing with Perfect Dark, which is my all-time favorite FPS (I still have my N64 cartridge, of course).  There are a couple of others I am interested in, which cause similar inner conflict: Contra ReBirth (Wii) and Gradius ReBirth (Wii).  Nevertheless, I will always prefer physical when it is an option.

There is just something satisfying about having something tangible that you can display on your shelf.  It does annoy me how a lot of physical releases are giving you less and less tangible assets.  A modern physical release doesn't feel like much at all.  Pick up a Mario Kart 8 case and compare it to Mario Kart Wii.  The MK8 feels like it weighs half as much.  It just doesn't feel like much at all.  Part of it is these Eco-boxes which just feel cheap and flimsy.  I am not a fan of them.  Then there is the manuals, which are frequently absent or reduced to an instruction card.  Many will argue that manuals are not necessary thanks to in-game tutorials, but that isn't the point.  A lot of times you used to get artwork of all the characters with descriptions, which was pretty cool.

I also like how I can still buy physical games that are 20-30 years old.  Granted, some of these have gotten pretty expensive, particularly with SNES games.  But the question is, will today's digital-only games still be available for purchase 20+ years down the road?  That remains to be seen.  I have read of publishers pulling the plug on a couple of digital games already, which means if you're out of luck if you haven't bought the game already.

Even for gamers we all agree that there more value if you can get a retail copy vs digital copy.

..

i disagree.  retail is worth at least 50% less to me than digital.   ..maybe even less.

i'll pay money for an mp3.  i won't even accept a CD anymore.   i feel almost the same about video games.

Even though you could take the files from the CD and convert them to mp3s and then sell the CD?

if i buy digitally i get to listen to the music now.

if i buy a cd i have to wait 5 days for it to ship (via amazon cause like hell i'm driving to best buy) take the time rip it and than transfer it to my phone.   fuck that shit.  how poor would i have to be that i'd rather wait a week and spend an hour fucking around with shit in order to save 5 bucks.  i have a kid now.  my free time is worth dramatically more than 5 bucks and hour.

Man, you spoke for me right there. With 2 kids, my time is at a premium, and I'm not about to run to a store to get shit, when I can download it. Now, I do still buy most of my games physically, but when I don't have the time to go get it, I download it. Music, I never buy cd anymore..... I just like to resell my games after some time....  other then that, no reason for physical anything.
