Looking on the unending flow of good exclusive games on 'nextgen' consoles aka PS4/X1 I made a desision to put my PC in a decent form and start playing 3rd party games on it.
So could anybody tell me what kind of machine will I need to play latest PC games with a comfort?
I will play it on my old Plazma HD-ready TV via HDMI and x360 gamepad, so I don't need it to be 1080р on ultra.
1280x720 with 4xAA and 60 fps on high will be more than enough for me.

My current setup is Intel Core Duo E7500, 4 Gb of Ram and 1 Gb AMD HD6800.

I feel that I need to up my RAM to 8 Gb and change a videocart to smth Nvidia's.

Any help/advices will be appreciated!

If you have a socket 775 for that Core2duo you could almost certainly go to a Core2Quad from Ebay those things cost in and around 50euros right now and the power boost you'll get will be massive.

If you're thinking about upgrading to 8gb of Ram you really will need to make sure your MoBo can take it, a lot of 775 socket ones cap out at 4gb, a tell tale sign of this would be if you right click on "Computer" and check how much ram is showing up there as useable because with a 1gb card you should already be running into memory addressing issues.

Also remember that if you want to go to anything over 4gb of memory you'll need to be using a 64bit version of whatever version of Windows you use, 32bit versions are capped at 4gb without some serious work arounds.

Yes, my MB supports 8Gb of RAM and i now ran on Win7 64-bit.

Well from my own exp the first thing I'd go for would be the cpu, going from Core2Duo to Quad can make the PC as a whole run smoother so it's just the foundation for enjoyable gaming to happen on, 720p/4GB isn't a bad combo, if you aren't opening many other things at the same time that amount of Ram should see you through for now.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/111498648887 that is one from the exact seller I bought mine from, very fast shipping and cheap enough for a decent performance boost to your machine if you are planning on sticking with your current rig for now.

This are some tests, it seems the difference is quite small in fact...

I guess if it's going from a higher end core2duo to a lower end core2quad the individual cores will be slightly slower if they're left on their own, you can ofc pay more to have the same core speed on all 4 as you have on both cores atm and the core2quads go up to 12mb cache size if you want to splash out a bit more.

Yeah, it seems I found Q8200 for dirty cheap in my city, so I think I'll try it. )

One thing I have to advise here, if you haven't replaced intel cpus too much make sure you watch a youtube vid about the way the pegs should be set up to go through the holes, you'll end up bending your board a lil bit if you try to force them through while they are locked open.

Tons o youtube vids on it tho.

Sorry if this is stuff you've done before and it's simple for ya, just had a little bother myself with my one so if you are going to have issues it will be here.

I know that vid is for a diff socket type but those 4 clippy pin things will be exactly the same on your 775 heatsink ie. a pain in the ass.

Thank you for the advice! But I'm OK in simple work with a computer, I had an experience of gathering a rig from scratch.

The Q8200 will be faster in some games, slower in others.
http://anandtech.com/bench/product/52?vs=87

The difference isn't nearly as substantual as going from your Core 2 Duo, to the FX 8320.
http://anandtech.com/bench/product/87?vs=698
Or the Core i5 4670K.
http://anandtech.com/bench/product/87?vs=837

Both of which would last many years to come, rather than only being a stop-gap.

You will want a 3.6ghz+ Core 2 Quad if you want any kind of reasonable performance in all of todays games, this is with extensive testing and overclocking of my own Core 2 Quad.
They're simply getting old, so you need to make up for that with extensive clockspeeds, unfortunatly you need a pretty beefy cooler and plentry of power to drive it also.

I still suggest dumping your current platform instead of sinking cash into it because just like a car, you eventually reach a point where it's really no longer worth upgrading/fixing.
