Forums - Nintendo - Majora's Mask 3D vs A Link Between Worlds (Sales)

So today Majora's Mask was announced for the Nintendo 3DS, a remake of the critically acclaimed 2000 N64 game and sequel to Ocarina of Time.

In 2011 Nintendo released Ocarina of Time 3D which went on to sell 3.41m copies worldwide compared to the original's 7.6m

A Link Between Worlds was released just last year in 2013 and has currently sold 2.18m, 435k of which was sold this year.

Majora' Mask on the N64 sold 3.36m, not bad for a game that required the expansion pack and released later on in the N64's life.

So who will sell more, Majora's Mask 3D or A Link Between Worlds?? Do you think either has a chance at surpassing Ocarina of Time 3D??

Wait... A remaster outsold a new game while having a smaller install base during launch of the game? Wtf?

Anyway, I say A Link Between Worlds just cause I don't think Majora's Mask is an easy game to get into for a lot of people

PC Specs: CPU: 7800X3D || GPU: Strix 4090 || RAM: 32GB DDR5 6000 || Main SSD: WD 2TB SN850

A Link Between Worlds (the sales should be so much higher; it is a masterpiece).

Majora's Mask will sell well though.

ALBW, no contest.

ALBW: 2.5mil+ (including digital)
MM 3D: 1mil-1.5mil LT imo

ALBW is selling fine, remember digital.

If MM sells 1M+, Nintendo should do a party

To be fair OoT3D has been out for 3.5 years and LBW has been out just under a year. I think lifetime sales will be similar

When the herd loses its way, the shepard must kill the bull that leads them astray.

Ocarina of Time will win easily, A Link Between Worlds hasn't been exactly selling at a great pace anymore. We'll see what the upcoming holiday season does for it, though it was released during it last year. It is however, at over 2.5m, Nintendo has that confirmed since March, but of course that includes digital sales.

I gather Majora's Mask will sell about similar to A Link Between Worlds. It's probably a more popular an higher profile game, even if it is a remake. The thing it has against it however is that it isn't a very accessible game and probably the hardest 3D Zelda to date. People know this. ALBW will win by virtue of being out longer I'd guess.

Also, predicting under a million is joke, I'd say 2-2.5m for MM3D while ALBW win end with 3m at most.

Time difference + tracking of eShop sales.

OoT3D sold 2.33 million in 2011, where it launched in June. LBW sold 1.74 million in 2013, where it launched in November.

Now look at second-year sales. OoT3D sold 593k in 2012. LBW is already at 435k with the busiest season coming up.

Nintendo's official numbers as of end of March 2014 have OoT3D at 3.35 million and LBW at 2.51 million. LBW had been out for just over 4 months at that point. VGChartz only has LBW at 2.18 million to date, so it is likely that the remaining 330k (plus however many more need to be accounted for regarding April-November sales) are digital. On the other hand, OoT3D is at 3.4 million on VGChartz now, so it doesn't look like there's much by way of eShop sales for OoT3D.

OoT3D was at 2.33 million at the end of 2011 after over 6 months of sales, whereas LBW was at 2.51 million after 4 months of sales, both including the holiday period. And it is likely that LBW will have a stronger second year than OoT3D, not counting digital sales.

So "outsold" is probably a poor choice of words. It has sold more LTD, but given that it's been out about 3.3 times longer, that shouldn't be overly surprising.

2 million+ for Majora is what I'm thinking, which also means ALBW wins. That reminds me, I still need to get that game!
