Wait... A remaster outsold a new game while having a smaller install base during launch of the game? Wtf?

Time difference + tracking of eShop sales.

OoT3D sold 2.33 million in 2011, where it launched in June. LBW sold 1.74 million in 2013, where it launched in November.

Now look at second-year sales. OoT3D sold 593k in 2012. LBW is already at 435k with the busiest season coming up.

Nintendo's official numbers as of end of March 2014 have OoT3D at 3.35 million and LBW at 2.51 million. LBW had been out for just over 4 months at that point. VGChartz only has LBW at 2.18 million to date, so it is likely that the remaining 330k (plus however many more need to be accounted for regarding April-November sales) are digital. On the other hand, OoT3D is at 3.4 million on VGChartz now, so it doesn't look like there's much by way of eShop sales for OoT3D.

OoT3D was at 2.33 million at the end of 2011 after over 6 months of sales, whereas LBW was at 2.51 million after 4 months of sales, both including the holiday period. And it is likely that LBW will have a stronger second year than OoT3D, not counting digital sales.

So "outsold" is probably a poor choice of words. It has sold more LTD, but given that it's been out about 3.3 times longer, that shouldn't be overly surprising.
