From the top of my head, there's three I can think of.

God of War 3: Got it from the bargain bin, so I thought I'd give it a chance. I expected it to be fairly cheesy and over the top, but while the latter is still true, it was over the top in a cool way and the game had better than expected mechanics and story. Got Ascension afterwards, but that was a total disappointment and completely failed to hit the mark.

Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones: Besides knowing it existed I didn't know anything about the franchise until this game came to 3DS as one of the Ambassador games. I was completely blown away, it's brilliant in a lot of ways. So good even, that it earned it's spot in my Top 50 Best Games list.

Metroid Fusion: Entirely similar to Fire Emblem, I never played the game until it came to 3DS. Contrary to Fire Emblem though, I knew 'Metroid' was good. I never bothered with the game though because I thought the GameBoy Advance and it's games were mediocre. Looking back I have to admit that I missed at least two classics.

God of War 3 is the God of all Hack and Slash games... The ones on the PSP are not too shabby either (many say Chains of Olympus is the best PSP game of all time).

To tell you the truth Fire Emblem Sacred Stones is my 2nd least favorite Fire Emblem. Don't get me wrong it's a GREAT GAME and full of nice characters and a good story. But the Fire Emblem b4 it set the the bar so high I had higher expectations for this game. I rate it an 8.5/10, but if you liked this one you'll love Fire Emblem: Awakening. It plays like Sacred Stones, so I STRONGLY recommend you check it out if you haven't.

And Metroid Fushion was a great game but I rushed to beat it when I was younger. Many Metroid fans say it's the best 2D Metroid of them all (though I think Super Metroid is better ) but it is the best 2d looking Metroid to date. The only thing I didn't like about Fusion is I felt it spoon fed you on where to go next.

Agree on GoW 3 being the best hack/slash game ever, though I must admit my experience with the genre remains limited.

The Sacred Stones is still the only Fire Emblem game I played. Been trying to get the other one on GBA, but it can be expensive if you want one that's stood the test of time. I'm definitely interested in Awakening. In fact I should have bought it a long time ago already because it looks amazing (and the demo was cool), but you can be sure that it will be part of my collection at one point .

True about Fusion, it's just a different game. I completed both, and both styles are excellent I think. I used to think Fusion would be the black sheep of the Metroid family so I never played it until it came to 3DS. The spoon feeding didn't bother me much to be honest, because they did it well and tied to a good story. I should have realized back when it came out originally that it would likely be a good game though instead if dismissing it, because if anything, Link's Awakening also proved that a certain game's 'little brother' can be even better than the 'big console game'.

Furthermore, I think I can add a fourth game to the list. Can't believe I forgot about it.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic: Even though I always liked the Star Wars franchise, the games were hit and miss for me. It has a lot of good games, games that ended up some of my favorites of all time, but also had a lot of mediocre ones or worse. I tried KotOR when my mother recommended it after playing the first part. I went in knowing little about the game. I was blown away. The game is basically perfect for my preferences. Gameplay-mechanics that seem tailor made for my liking along with maybe the most epic story to ever grace the field of gaming, amazing setpieces and levels and of course a classic soundtrack.

Yeah Awakening is an awesome game... shared it with someone and played a total of 444 hours BTW both... (I think 344 hour are mine).

Fusion and Link's Awakening comparison is spot on... I enjoyed the Story of it over console games such as even Skyward Sword...

And KotoR... my brother plays that... love the soundtrack for it... having a Star Wars OSS is always a plus...

Xenoblade, I expected to like it, did not expect it to be my favorite video game of all time!

I really hope Xenoblade X follows up on Chronicles...

BioShock

I had just gotten my wisdom teeth removed and was at Blockbuster looking for a game or two to rent. I am not a huge FPS guy and hadn't heard much about the game prior. Saw something on the back of the case about RPG and thought "FPS RPG? I'm high on vicodin, I will try that" and it quickly became one of my top 5 games of all time.

I've got faith it will, Monolith obviously knows what they're doing with the Xeno series. I've really liked every one of them (and if it wasn't for Saga could say I LOVED every one of them) since Gears.

Valkyria Chronicles. I did know nothing about the game, it was my first time in Japan, the game was secondhand and very cheap, I bought it just because Sega was written on it...

GTA 3. Never heard about it, a friend just gave me the PC version to me and said "you have to try it !". I don't know if the game was not that famous or if it was because I was not interested in console games. Or perhaps I was playing so much Starcraft I was not even checking new games.

After giving it some more thought the best example for me is Kingdom Hearts. It's a game that just shouldn't work and on many levels it doesn't, the controls can be slippery, the interface is clunky, your allies are often more of a liability than a help, and the story is just balls to the wall crazy; yet it's so damned charming I couldn't help but love every minute of it.

They way the story has progressed through the handheld versions has been a bit more off putting, as it's found ways to make an already inane story somehow more ludicrous, but it still hasn't managed to shatter my fondness for the series.

EDGE on Wii U

I wasn't expecting much for a $2 indie, but it was really fun with lots of content.

I predict NX launches in 2017 - not 2016

Never heard of it... might have to check it out...

Transistor and Dead Space 1. Both have become some of my favorite games.
