You can't just assume without evidence that Borderlands has underperformed due to art direction; you would need proof.

Same goes for you assuming it hasn't impacted its sales negatively.

Well if you're going to play that game, we may as well take the YouTube comments style and shout obscenities at each other for all the good it will do.  All that we know is that the games are multimillion sellers with the art direction they have; that is what I put forward and that is not an assumption, that is a fact.  And asking me to prove he nonexistence of potential buyers put off by one specific element of a game is silly.

However, I would like to point out that Wind Waker sits at the 6th best selling Zelda game spot while Majora's Mask is at 11th.  And a bit above Wind Waker is Phantom Hourglass, a spinoff with that same style.  It's not all about art direction, there are other forces at play.  You can't just take the numbers in a vacuum.

And Twilight Princess obliterated Skyward Sword and Wind Waker in sales. Of course there are other factors, but art style is clearly a major one in this current market obsessed with graphics and "hardcore" (read: gritty and dark) games.

The top one looks much nicer. Sales be dammed, I'm glad they went with this style.

In reference to Wind Waker, Twilight Princess was on a far larger platform.  In reference to Skyward Sword, it launched at the tail end of the Wii, after the Wii U was announced and after years of appathy and incompetence in marketing had eroded the image of the Wii and Nintendo.  Skyward Sword also had  very little marketing.  If you switched the their release dates, they would likely swap sales for the most part.

Those things were factors. So was art style. The gaming market is currently ruled by superficial dudebros for whom "kiddy" is the ultimate sin and graphics mean everything.

By and large, the only people interested in a cartoonish Zelda are diehard fans.

The actual game looks better to me than the demo. The artstyle is wonderful!!

Also, on the note of other factors, if you want to talk about something in the game that is hamstringing sales, I would lean more towards lack of voice acting. Art direction is what it is, people can move past that I think. But lack of voice acting these days is no small matter. Call it a "tradition" if you want, but times have changed and now lack of voice acting is viewed as either lazy or the sign of a low budget. And before the pitchforks come out, no, I don't think Link should be voiced. Rather, I think the game should follow the Elder Scrolls and Metroid Prime model of voicing everyone except Link. If TES has proved one thing, it's that silent protagonists aren't a problem. But silent games are.

Wow

LOL. We have come full circle. I remember this exact same argument being used during the Gamecube era, then Nintendo added voice acting to Mario Sunshine, then they (smartly) removed it in Mario Galaxy and Mario Galaxy obliterated Sunshine in sales.

A platformer and a dialogue heavy, story centered adventure series are entirely different; you can't just compare two games of different genres.  The question isn't "what do fans want" but "what can broaden appeal."  And voice acting done well with good writing would help tremendously.  The fact Zelda is still a multimillion seller without voice acting in its genre is nothing short of a miracle to be honest.
