What the fuck is GamerGate... on second thought, I probably dont want to know

Around the Network

Gamergate needs to continue. It's stupid to say all gamergaters are mysoginists because maybe one or two are.

It's the same as saying all muslims are terrorists just because ISIS is.

Gamergate pressures the industry, it will filter the bad out of the good, slowly but surely.

Unite for sexism? Yay?

The shitty thing is that the feminazi side of the whole Gamergate scandal seems to have won by casting themselves as the victims and garnering sympathy in the mainstream media, such as Sarkeesian going on the Colbert Report where Stephen of course does his part to push the "all gamers are adolescent males who hate women" meme.

And like another poster mentioned, notice that Sarkeesian doesn't complain about the treatment of women in other forms of media such as movies TV and music, and you'll never catch her criticizing the treatment of women under Islamic rule because all of a sudden her sympathizers in the media will turn on her in an instant and give her the Bill Maher treatment.

You know I was always wondering why no one ever used the dollar sign for $ony, but then I realized they have no money so it would be pointless.

That Zoey woman is still all over Kotaku, talking about her cyberimplants, what her cat ate, the color of her poo...
Nothing has changed...

My grammar errors are justified by the fact that I am a brazilian living in Brazil. I am also very stupid.

What the hell is gamer gate? I tried researching it but I can't go beyond the huge text wall.

I'm no expert but basically this woman made a shitty text game then slept with five different guys involved with the gaming biz, some which gave it good reviews/helped it get on steam or something.

basically this disgruntled ex-boyfriend wrote a blog about how his ex-gf, who deved depression quest, slept with reviewers from different websites

it is confirmed she has a relationship with someone from Kotaku (her current bf), who wrote one article that mentioned depression quest among other games (apparently prior to the relationship), but never did a review on it

Basically this is the main reason a lot of people (including me) don't respect the gamergate movement.  They got so angry at a women game developer because she slept with a game journalist.  This game was basically free and the game journalist didn't write an article about the game during their relationship.  This is what started the whole gamergate movement.

Around the same time youtubers were getting early access to shadows of mordor if they didn't say anything negative about the game.  Gamergate was relatively silent about this.  Games journalism has had integrity issues before, but it was Quinn's personal life  that got them angry.   Of course it is all about integrity In games journalism...

Lol this thing is already fading into the background. The purported purpose of gamergate: corruption in the gaming media1, is trivial bullshit. Boo hoo the gaming press and the game makers are a little too cosy. Who gives a crap? This isn't Boko Haram, this isn't ISIL, this isn't child abuse, or Israel/Palestine, or the rainforests, or global warming or not global warming, or corruption of police, or politicians.

The only game I've ever bought on hype and ended up hating is because of gamer hype, being the same level as review scores, not because review scores were stupidly high for a rubbish game.

If gamer gate is uniting against feminism, then they've lost their way, and they've proven they aren't really about corruption in the gaming media. And they're stupid. The more you fight feminism the more feminists can claim to be the victims. And the non-gamer public is generally willing to believe the worst about gamers.

There are plenty of gamers who think gamergate is tainted in its origins anyway, so it's definitely not a unifying influence. In fact it's just another dividing line.

Just because an issue is relatively small, doesn't make it trivial. I mean, if you honestly believe that first paragraph, what are you doing wasting your time with video games at all? Why should we not fight to make the video game industry a better place? The media can singlehandedly make a game a success or destroy it (if you haven't read Tachi's thread from a few days ago, you really should), should we not try to cut out as much bias as possible so games can get a fair shot?

People also aren't fighting feminism, they are fighting extremist feminism and the obsession with the politically correct. If you have seen the bullshit that Kotaku likes to post, or the Polygon Bayo 2 review (or so many other bullshit pieces, or the hypocrisy in all media when it comes to women's issues vs human issues), then you would see why this stuff is a blight to the industry. And, it is largely part of the corruption in the industry, as many of these pieces are just sensationalist click bait....

I agree that GamerGate should be abandoned, but only in name. The cause is a good one, and to see any gamer rising up against it makes me disappointed in the amount of shit some of you can take.

If there is a useful purpose of Gamergate is definitely isn't being projected outside of 4chan and Reddit

Best chance for people who actually see there is some merit to it, drop the moniker- its been completely destroyed by the guys whom insist on sending death threats or personal attacks or character assassinations as opposed to actually arguing specific points.

To my knowledge, none of those threats were done under the GamerGate name.

Do people still not know what feminism means? It doesn't mean women take over the world and men become the subjected. It means equal rights for both sexes. And before anyone says that's not what all feminist fight for you need to remember with any movement there are radicals. The radicals don't define the collective. To put it simple if you think women should have equal rights by definition you are a feminist.

When the radicals are the loudest voice, whose to say they don't define the movement? This is what people have done to GamerGate, even though the radicals aren't even close to the loudest voice. Feminism isn't what it used to be....

and... what does this have to do with gamer gate and the topic of the OP? I don't understand.

GamerGate is largely about how the media handled all of these events, with massive censorship, attacks on gamers, radical feminism, and basically a large orchestrated movement to push it all under the rug. GamerGate doesn't care about Zoe Quinn, the only people who bring her up any more are the ones who want to paint her as a victim to be used to attack GamerGate. There is a lot of good writing about GamerGate, unfortunately it tends to get buried under all the people ignorantly calling it a mysogynist movement. Here is one piece that I like: http://techcrunch.com/2014/09/25/gamergate-an-issue-with-2-sides/

it wont, neither side is going to win, theyre just going to eventually stop being newsworthy and the moment the media isnt seeing enough revenue from covering it, and stops doing so, it will fade in to obscurity like every other industry scandal.

The feminists will go find another soapbox to abuse and the gamergaters will go back to their console wars and anonymous COD cussing.

Yea people said that months ago. Now the hacker group anonymous it's getting involved they're pro gamer gate. This is only just getting started.

I thought this would disappear by now it's clear gamers aren't letting this go.

Ah, it's about feminism?

Then I'm obviously pro-gg then. Feminism is garbage, especially these fools trying to apply it to gaming.

This is probably about as close to true as something like this can get.

I don't care at all about Quinn and I think Sarkeesian is a con artist who should be ignored.  However, when all these gaming media sites launched attacks on the people who play games at the same time, it was clear something was messed up behind the scenes.  Read the Gamasutra piece, which is basically a childish tantrum intended to insult guys who play video-games as a hobby, or the Verge article painting anyone who disagreed as "anti-femanist".  The arrogance of it is off the charts and yet these are the people who are making money off the back of the industry.

I'm simply not going to support these websites or these people who think they control gaming media and can do as they please.
