Fun fact, nintendo themselves stated that the wii U was now selling for a profit right before mk8 launch. Its pretty obvious the console will make a profit in the end which in turn makes it another successful generation for nintendo. Profits matter. In that regard ps3 failed. People basing things solely on the amount a console sells doesn't understand the full story.

Yes I want it to sell well, but more than that I want nintendo to post a profit from it when it comes to pass.

Nintendo did not say they were selling at a profit ( someone else did and they were wrong) according to direct quotes from Iwata See the Investor Q and A during the same time period -end of last fiscal year, the Wii u does not sell at a profit

The Wii u has not been a success for Nintendo, its shareholder and so far for many of its console owners-  the Wii u still has a decent chance at being a success for the majority of its owners but being a success for Nintendo and shareholders is not going to happen unless they have a massive turn around which it does not look like Nintendo is trying to make happen as it would take too much risk for them to attempt-

the wii wiiu will cost Nintendo money, market share and credibility ( short of a miracle)

re answe (A) above Nintendo did not deliver what they promised from early on and they def did not deliver 3rd party support like they promised.

In all likley hood, the only group that has a chance at being pleased w the Wii u will be some % of its current and future console owners but Mintendo still has a ways to go for that to happen for a high majority

In October 2012, Iwata said the Wii U will be profitable in the next fiscal year. That was now two calendar years ago. So a safe assumption is that the Wii U has been turning a profit for Nintendo on each unit sold since June (right when MK8 released).

In April+- of this year Iwata said it cost more to manufacture the Wii u than they can sell them for -  so your assumption is not a safe one.   I would not put much stock in Iwatas future projections as they are often way way off.

You just stated what I said was right .....long term profitability .....Nintendo has Made a profit off every home consoled they have released that is called long term profitability ...lol...Sony has not made back all the money they have lost on the ps3 ......you said selling 80,000,000 was great but how great is that if you can't turn a profit ...that makes zero sense .......did you see the graph on the sells of all three companies ....Nintendo has made 25 billion ......Sony 2 billion and Microsoft has never profited off the xbox brand loses billions ..I'm gonna show you the graph

Long term profitability as in investment now will lead to lots of profits in the future. Sony have done that with the PS consoles, the PS4 is now set to make plenty of money because of it's prior investments.

Nintendo haven't done that. They haven't effectively built up a brand. Did the success of the Wii translate into the Wii U doing really well? Nope, the Wii was a short term profit and now they are screwed with the Wii U.

Lol really ...they haven't built up a brand lol ....how do you think they made a profit once again on every home console made lol what are you talking about lol you act like Nintendo is doing terrible last time I checked they are number 1 in portable hardware and number two in home  hardware ....Nintendo isn't doing nearly as bad as people make it out to be and in the next 3 years all sales will be profit since the wii u isn't gonna be sold as a loss and have quality first party software that's coming out ....also to your point ps3 sold half of what playstation 2 sold so would that in your eyes be considered as building abrand just a question lol

When is the last time Nintendo has been profitable over a course of their fiscal year?   It's been several years of losses- before that they had gone so,etching like 80 years w ouut an annual loss-   So profitablity long and short term is very important to Nintendo yet they have. It achieved that goal in a while-  on top of that they have lost huge market share in both of their console business s and and they have lost credibility with many of their long time customers -   This fiscal year and next should be thier big money making years but they wil be fortunate to male a small profit much less make a lot

@ka-pi .http://gamerinvestments.com/video-game-stocks/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/sony-nintendo-microsoft-operating-income-chart-fix.jpg....this is the profits of all three companies up until 2011 .........people lie numbers don't ....everyone look at this chart........type in...... "State of the video game console war" and it has a graph on all three

It says page not found -   Either way I did not realize MSFT had ever given separate numbers for their gaming division -  who supplies the numbers in the graph you are referring -  I can t pull it up or I would look myself

Sony has some very well in virtually every area of their gaming since they started w the PS1-   I know they lost money early on w the PS3 but it has come back strong and def helped the PS4 get off to a strong start -

MSFT necame a force in gaming in less than 2 generations-  including digital software sales the 360 has probably already sold more software than the Wii and may even sell more physical software than the Wii before it is over -  they also just invested 2.5 billion in Nuying Mojang-  I m not saying it was or was. It a good investment we will have to see but it is def a vote of confidence in the XBox division

with the exception of the Wii, Nintendo s business has declined consistently for several generations -   They are not holding up well to the competition

The constant pummeling of Nintendo/Wii U is doomed stuff is what drove me away of this website (posting and visiting 95% less than I used to in my prior 8 years here), combined with the insufferable and unwarrented arrogance of Sony fanboys. I've pretty much come to accept that it's never going to leave, thus I had to.

The vast majority of self proclaimed "hardcore" gamers have a mad obsession with Nintendo completely biting the dust. Why? I will never know. They are the best gaming company in existance, and have been since the 80s. Yet these people shun them, while praising the souless corporate machines that continue to crank out the same generic stuff from Sony and MS, who care nothing about gamers.. This has baffled me since 2001 and still does.

Best post in this entire thread right here.

Amazing how selective people are with threads on this site.

RIP Dad 25/11/51 - 13/12/13. You will be missed but never forgotten.

I bought a Wii U last month. I am doing my job on saving it from DOOM itself.

Its estimated bill of materials was ~$160 in January 2012, so, if it wasn't already profitable then, it became not too later. Obviously there are also the initial costs to recoup, and the part of online services offered for free, but if we include physical and digital SW sales it should have already given a small overall profit.
Also, Sony indirectly confirms this, as PSV isn't amongst the reasons it listed for the losses (the main reason stated for entertainment division losses in the last annual report was all the costs related to PS4 launch).

Makes me wonder why the 3DS getting dropped to $170 was so expensive for Nintendo then. Vita obviously has a lot more going on under the hood.

3DS has 3D and two screens (and on a much smaller scale, also the hinged case increases costs), plus they dropped price very early, I'm quite sure that by now it's profitable.  BTW nothing indicates stellar profits for PSV, just nice ones, enough to make appealing for Sony to keep on selling it. Add to this that even with low WW sales PSV has become quite important to keep the PS brand alive in Japan, Sony's home market. This doesn't change the fact that Sony is wasting PSV's potential outside of Japan, even if it cannot fully support two platforms, PS4 and PSV, it could still do more with not too much money, for example partially funding western localization of a larger library of Japanese 3rd party titles. If PSV is destined to remain niche, Sony could at least try and make the most of it.

If you've been here 8 years did you not notice the arrogance of Nintendo fanboys when the Wii and DS were doing so well then?

What comes around goes around...

Notice?! he was one of the main ones.

Wii U has the best games so far. And as long as Zelda and Metroid are great I will consider my money well spent. The games are all that matter to us consumers, stop this partisan nonsense.

I honestly feel sorry for all the Sony fanboys who are enjoying the fact that Nintendo is not doing well at the moment. Nintendo will always be the greatest video game producer of all time, but I'll let history be the judge. Oh wait,  history has already decided, and it's Nintendo? OK then.

um pretty sure history has shown that Sony has sold more home consoles than Nintendo. Ok then

I would say somethign rude about your inabiltiy to unde...... I'm sorry that was going to be rude as well. He is not saying anything about console sales, he is talkiing about the quality of games nintendo produces which makes them the greatest video GAME produce of all time. Nothing to do with sales. Especially since console sales don't prove anything. Let's look at nintendo vs sony fromt he software point of view 1st party vs 1st party. :)
