Im talking about the nonsensical story. Of course I am a hack n slash player and Bayonetta (of course its one of my favorite hack n slashes ever)was a challenging one but it is known for the fact that you have to put the story to the side. God of War balanced the action with the presentation into one cohesive unit, which is why it became the package the it became. Bayonetta is underrated and lacks because of it but it has its own beauty and charm. This is why I cannot wait to play Bayonetta 2. Its the spiritual successor to DMC and does it in a way that would make even DMC blush. Neither games had great stories nor did they rely on them, but rather the stylish look and style of the characters. It was the attitude that made them stand out in their respective eras. Kratos....Kratos is just a beast.

I actually enjoyed the story in the Bayonetta games because it was nonsensical.

Its outrageously over-the-top moments and characters were highly entertaining to me, and I loved its sense of humour and how playful and sassy it was. I liked it the same way I like movies like Fight Club or The Big Lebowski.

Ugh, that's just insulting to films like the big lebowski and inglorious basterds, and the word story.

High praise as far as I'm concerned, to be associated with the two finest works in their genre and medium.

Well I knew your stance obviously, my objection in this matter is that while movies like inglorious basterds and the big lebowski may be silly at times (and in ways inherently) their storylines are still cogent at their base and had some sort of an impact.  Bayonetta (and really, platinum games in general) is all flash and no substance.

I'd respectfully disagree; in Bayonetta 2 there was genuine heart beneath all the flashy silliness; the scene where Bayonetta's father asks her just once to call him "Daddy", and that he wants her to be the one to kill him should be succumb to evil actually quite impacted me, particularly as, due to him being sent back in time, she had already done so in the first game but without realizing at the time, though he of course would have remembered. It tied the games together very effectively too and allowed Bayonetta to broaden her range and display emotional vulnerability without weakening her strong persona.

The very first God of War is still one of my favorite action games and the pinnacle of the whole genre. Of course the sequels aren't as good so it isn't the most consistent franchise, but I have yet to play a Devil May Cry that matches the first God of War.

Sigs are dumb. And so are you!

Nice thread.

Story: Hands down God of War 1, 2, Chains of Olympus. A dark twisted take on Greek mythology with an anti-hero main character, Really well made. Although DmC's story was a lot better than previous games, a lot of it was predictable, that scene were Kratos murders his family was a complete shock to me,

Gameplay: Devil May Cry, no contest.

Level design: Pretty much even. Quality wise both have unique aesthetic. DmC edges out the previous games because of the Limbo world, but about even with the sheer quality of God of War's evironments.

And then looking at sales, God of War 2 + 3 alone at ~10.8 million actually sold more than all 5 original games in the Devil May Cry series which total only 10.66m . An exclusive series that started late in the life of the PS2 has already sold over twice as many units in 9 1/2 years than DMC has in 13 years on multiple platforms.

The acclaim and sales obviously show that God of War is a far more beloved and popular series due to its overwhelming quality

In every measurable way, God of War is far superior. That doesn't mean people aren't allowed to prefer DMC, but when people talk nonsense about GoW saying things like 'It's not even in the same genre' just because they focus on accessibilty and fun versus overcomplicated combat and difficulty. Or 'DMC is a better series as it has room to expand in any direction they want, but GoW doesnt' as if they've all got a guns to their heads at SMS and aren't allowed to change anything ever. It is just annoying to see such bitterness towards the one franchise that kept the genre relevant, especially since the genre is currently struggling more than ever.

If we simply use acclaim then Wii Sports is such a vastly superior game to God of War that it's embarassing. So much quality.

Or it could be the fact that GoW is simply easier. Reviewers love easier combat because it makes their jobs easier, players love easier combat because they don't want to pay $50-60 to suck. Which is often the case with DMC, particularly DMC3 because NA release was the original hard difficulty.

Legend of Korra is a great example. It's not a great game, it being an activision licensed title with a few month dev time, but the combat is solid, arguably better than GoW. It completely went over many reviewers' heads though. One of which sums up my point. He was speaking of the different styles and the role each played, then was stupid enough to claim "...I switched to fire style when I wanted to die." Fire style is actually really good and has its own unique move set even before unlocking further techniques. He was just really bad at the gameplay and rated it down because of his lack of familiarity with the genre and own poor performance.

I've actually written for small and mid tier sites and I can tell you sometimes they give reviews to people who have no right playing a certain genre of game. It would be like putting me on the latest CoD reviews. I hate FPS games. I'm not particularly bad at them, I just don't like them and don't see the appeal. You wouldn't want me to rate that game.  It's the same reason you don't want the CoD/GoW lover reviewing DMC because it's pretty foreign to them. Especially when their SST habbits result in the game constantly telling them they suck with its rating system on screen or just murdering them.

They aren't the same genre either. DMC is a character action game. It focuses on character development and style with an emphasis on combat mastery. Players are constantly pushed and rewarded for variation and style. Does God Of War have variation? Yeah a bit, but the combat is specefically designed to appeal to the lowest common denominator, and that's why it's more popular. Not everyone likes being cockslapped by enemies because they suck and need to learn to play, especially when they can dudebro it up with Square Square Triangle and get to feel like a "real man" because they see titties and have offscreen sex with polygonal characters.

On another note. Bayonetta 2 is on a new plane altogether. It's now the gold standard all other games should be compared to. I would go so far as to say it usurps your choice of Terminator 2, Godfather 2, or Empire Strikes Back as the greatest sequel ever created in any medium. Yeah I went there.

Better Settings: God of War...

Everything else Devil May Cry......

The first Devil May Cry is way better than all the six God of War games, but it's only my opinion......

I can't speak to the second, perhaps the writing improved but the story in the first was so appalling that it offended me on a basic level.
