This subject was done to death years ago, for a while we locked threads on it.

Microsoft had a worldwide 3 year warranty. The very nature of the RROD was that it tended to cause consoles to fail quite quickly. Any defective PS3's would likely have gone in their first year as well. It just isn't realistic to think that a large number of consoles are repurchases because of failures.

More 'extra' consoles will have been sold because of slim PS3's and Xbox 360's.

Well I know as a kid I went through several PS1's and a couple PS2's, Went through 1 360 which was an original 20 GB model and it lasted up until 2011 I believe.

I purchased the Elite xbox 360, it lasted me the whole time, until I purchased a slim, and gave the elite to my brother. I took that thing on deployments to the dusty ass middle east and it still works now. Biggest problem was also most people don't let their systems get proper ventilation or blow any compressed air through those things. The layers of dust over the years probably killed just as many xbox's and ps3's. It's just like when I help clean my friends PC's and am usually shocked they still work with a layer of dust, and pet hair inside everything.

Wasn't the warranty not in effect until July 2007, though?

i bought 1 PS,1 PS2 but 2 PS3,blu-ray drive went twice

The RROD was a big issue, but XB360 has about the same software attach rate as PS3 so I wouldn't say it's affected it's install base that much.

A lot of people got replacement 360s under Microsoft's warranty. I got 3 replacements under warranty.  1st console had RAM overheating problems, 2nd console got RROD, 3rd console got a broken disc drive.  My 4th 360 also has a pretty shitty disc drive.

Other consoles also had a lot of failures though. First PS1 had CD laser carrier issues. PS2 also had DVD drive issues.

Well the Elite was the first somewhat quality build 360.  All the ones that didn't have a HDMI ports where pretty much garbage.

Pretty much all cartrige based consoles are indestructible.

I think it was earlier than that, and it was retrospective.
