Forums - Gaming - what would you think about a mid gen hardware upgrade on a home console?

give me n64 expansion pack style upgrades and I will be fine with that. (the upgrade was basically free with DK64)

the upgradeson 3DS were more than ebought for many thing that couldnt be done before on a nintendo hendhelds:
OoT, monster hunter, smash, pokemon in 3D.

So, the numbers dont matter.
if they can bring new experiences you are in the new gen.

I think DS to 3DS is a greater gen leap than ps3 to ps4.

so i'm going to ignore the 3DS for my bit.

if a new version of the ps4 released that could be a game that looks awesome but can't be played on the old version of the ps4 i'd be pissed.

if a new version of the ps4 released and it played the exact same games but added enticing new OS features (example of which i cannot currently fathom) i could be pretty excited.

..basically the details of the situation matter. but, imo, the key value proposition of a console compared to PC is that i can play any game without the need to upgrade my hardware every 2 years or think about compatibility issues.

Why does Nintendo get a free pass with mid-gen hardware upgrades on handhelds that makes early gen units essentially obsolete for most future game releases, when if this was done with any home console the company would be eviscerated by the public and media? And if Sony tried it with PSP they would have been pilloried too.

surely the point of a console generation is that units bought on day one of the generation will be able to play last game released.

Well, Sony did increased the PSP RAM from 32 to 64MB. The compatibility with games was the same tough, the extra RAM was just for multitasking so the compatibility was 100%.

Technically it happened last Gen, The Kinect version of the X360 can play titles which can't be played without Kinect, would imagine it caused a bit more annoyence considering that a few of the Games with Gold were Kinect titles so the free games offered to X360 owners couldn't be played without additional Hardware.

Sure you could go out and buy the hardware upgrade for your launch day 360 but original Kinect was 150euros and needed to play some games. This is more or less the same amount of money it'll cost you to go from 3ds > New 3ds if you make use of a trade in system of your older model 3DS.

CPS2 can't be emulated on a psp1000 because of the lower RAM.... DAMN YOU SONYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY.

Think you're 100% right tho, all retail games from the psp work on all models.

I would be fine with a ps4 revision with HDMI 2.0, 4K blu-ray support, whatever flavor of new wifi, bigger HDD or even a combined SSD + HDD version. However changing the hardware specs for games is not cool. The whole point of dedicated consoles is coding to 1 hardware target, not wasting time on different versions. Arguably having to support the 360 arcade and 12gb PS3 was distracting enough already for game development.

I highly disprove and I think whether we want to admit it or not, Nintendo has essentially entered a new handheld generation.

So we are looking at the first time in video game history that a new generation of hardware has launched with exactly zero games and only one title that is slated as TBA.

Whether you want to admit it or not, you didn't think this through at all.

That one game you are talking about happens to be one of my most anticipated titles.  Sucks for me right?  Because I need to get the new system if I want to play it right? Sign... I did think through it and I am fustrated.   I will wait while you qualify my concerns and make them valid.  For me, it is a new handheld generation.  Who doesn't want Xblade in their pocket?

Because they have never done this.

New 3DS has already launched, which future game releases make the current model obsolete?

Xenoblade...a game I really, really want to play but currently have no means.

Not only do I think it's unfair to current 3DS owners, I think it's a pretty stupid move that will just confuse consumers even further.

I would say they ain't getting anymore of my money.
