Forums - Gaming - Crash Team Racing or Mario Kart 64?

What I liked about CTR was that it was a real racing game. The track designs were awesome, and if you took the time to learn them, it definitely paid off. There were so many ways to build up speed, like collecting items and building up big air on jumps. There were no cheap speed boosts for AI opponents either. If you take them out, and they catch up with you, they did it fair and square. I hated that in MK64, you could blast your enemy, not make a single mistake, and 15 seconds later they'd pass you like you were sitting still.

CTR was a rip off, but it was a rip off done right. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but dislike Crash Team Racing because you blindly follow Mario Kart, and you have cheated yourself. If you haven't played it, play it now! It hold's up very well. Don't touch the sequel, though.

Well I've played CTR for PSone, and Mario Kart for GBA and I'd have to go with CTR.

MK64

N64 is the ONLY console of the fifth generation!

Just out of interest: What do fans of CTR think about its follow up, Jak X: Combat Racing? Was it a good "sequel"?

Hmmm, never played it.  Did you play CTR? Anyways, couldn't tell you sorry.  Can you compare MK and CTR, your input would be valued. :)

MK64 had more of a charm with how everything like how the level design and gameplay and weapons fitted with the Mario universe.

Never played CTR but judging from the video, it looked like a bit of a ripoff where the levels were designed the way they were cause it looked cool to the designer. I had the same problem with Diddy Kong racing and didn't like that game for the same reason.

Well, they may have taken the idea, but your love for everything Mario doesn't change the fact that the Crash game could be better. There is a history of ideas being taken from some companies and being improved upon by others. I'm arguing that this is one of those times. Ripoff or not, quality doesn't require complete creativity. I'm saying that everything MK did, CTR did better, or almost everything. Again, I'm not gonna sit here and say CTR can beat the nostalgia factor, because it can't. But if you take the two games and forget that one has a fat man in a red hat, that the facts would favor CTR.

The overall level/character design for any game includes all the aspects, including a fat man in a red hat.  Would Halo 3 be the same without the signature characters/weapons?  Would Madden be the same without the name?  You can't just arbitarily take certain things out and they say, well if we don't account for that, this is better.  Everything goes into the impression of a game, including character design.  Just because CTR didn't have as strong of a character/story/world design as Mario doesn't mean it should be dismissed.

CTR : best racer of all times , and thats that . Mario Kart on the SNES was good , but I hated the N64 version , and Ive got so bored of the DS version , in such a small ammount of time :? CTR is still easily among my 10 ... no 5 favorite games of all , and yes , CB3 is there to :)

 What? Not CB2? :(

CTR for me as well, while I only played MK64 on occastions round a mates house I never found it as fun.

Hmm, pie.

Mario Kart 64 was horrible, Crash Team Racing easily kicked it's ass.

Super Mario Kart is better then both though. And Mario Kart DS owns all!

Prepare for termination! It is the only logical thing to do, for I am only loyal to Megatron.

MK 64.

since I never played CTR, I'll say MK64

Mario Kart 64...
