As some of you have heard this generation of consoles most likely won't out do it's predeccssors, and i've heard some say this might be the last generation of dedicated gaming consoles.

I myself honestly think that the console industry is going to have to shrink or it will go under, in otherwords i think the industry is going to a have to go back to say a 5th generation or 6th generation sized market to stay profitable. This just my own idea, which i'm sure i'm not the first to have it but just thought i'd share it.

how do you define dedicated gaming console?

Any device that was built with gaming as it's priority, and and is bought for video game entertainment.

Thanks for sharing this idea 6 years late, and fyi, this idea has been proven 6 years wrong.

If you are trying to say mobile is going to overtake consoles.

I don't see myself gaming on my Iphone until Iphone like.... 10 by the speed they are upgrading the phones. For one thing, touchscreen gaming feels awkward and retarded.

If you are trying to say PC is going to overtake consoles.

You must have been living in a cave for the past 15 years plus.

Ok do tell how has this idea been proven wrong?

ok then i think you will be wrong for this being the last generation of gaming...

i am pretty sure the blueprint for the big three is already printed and just need more r and d for the cpu (or whatever) and how it will be price and compare to the new one that will come out in let's say about 4-5 years....

I think it's going to have to change. Gaming has always evolved so as long as it isn't just a remake of the 7th gen, things should be fine. If things get boring and there's a lack of innovation, expect gamers to move on to the next big thing.

So much this. The industry will change; not go under. This is what I've been chanting for years in here now.

I wonder how though.

Moving to something like streaming services would suck IMO.

It will return to it's normal size like 5 and 6th gen

PS4 - over 100 millions let's say 120m
Xbox One - 70m
Wii U - 25m

Vita - 15m if it will not get Final Fantasy Kingdoms Heart and Monster Hunter 20m otherwise
3DS - 80m

This being the last generation of consoles wasn't my idea just a idea I've  heard thrown  around .  I think the industry just won't be able to support a market as big as 7th gen.

It's growing for some and shrinking for some. I'm not complaining!

Yeah, there still isn't any proper system in place. I think we'll see some transitional devices and ideas. The music, movie and TV industry had their revolutions, and they survived them with good margins, only makes sense that gaming would need a similar shift in time.

We're already seeing some fairly creative solutions to keep the industry pumping; Steam have started doing free-to play weekends, among other things, where you can download and play games for free to get a taste of them, as a step-up from the old demo days from the 90's and earlier 2000's. I think we'll see more fusing of concepts in the next few years and I don't think the 9th generation will have a single traditional console in it (as in; a gaming device still relying heavily upon retail sales and TV campaigns and sporting online components that take the gaming community and connectivity a huge step forward).

Hard to predict.

There is still a large market that wants the type of games you can only get from a game console or a PC.

MS in particular probably needs to close the gap between their console gamers and PC gamers.

There will be both

The digital market will overtake the physical market but both will be there. Look at the music & movie industry.

Digital sales trash physical sales for music but CD's are still around.
People rent / stream movies via On Demand, Netflix, and so on. Yet, DVD's are still kicking.

My guess is that next-gen we'll see two consoles from Sony & Microsoft. One will have the ability to play physical games like it's been while the other is all digital. You will have a choice.

Nintendo will likely stay with a traditional console next-gen. They are always late with these types of things. (Before anyone jumps my case, I never said this was bad)
