Interesting, since I think the PS4 will hit that number in the end. And it's impressive that they have never had a (home) console sell less than 90M+, while only one other console from a different manufacturer being able reach that goal, with the 360 maybe hitting it.

Except they don't lol

they do actually lol

and why was he moderated for that? it is very, very relevant.    If you break console sales records and still lose money then what are you doing?

Playstation does not.  They are still a net profit even if they lost money a few years (Like both Nintendo and definately MS has).

How they do it is because of the sheer quantity of titles, mainly thanks to the third parties.

Sony's consoles are a vehicle for third party devs, nothing more. There's no big secret behind their success.

Just let that sink in for a second. No other competitors have hit that make with there best selling console nor have come close. How do they do it? Is it a standard thing like every tissue is a Kleenex, every Monster Truck is a Bigfoot, every gaming console is a Playstation? World recognition?  At times it seems they dont even know why they are selling so well. Any way I was just really amazed at that figure and whated to know what the community thinks. Also does that mean if the PS4 dosent sell 115 Mil than it is a failure?

Playstation has had a knack (hehe) for hitting the right spots at the right time. PS1 had the CD going for it as well as being the first console to offer adults the ability to play games without fear of being called immature. PS2 had DVD playback and it also had a LOCK DOWN on third party support the likes we will never see again. The PS3 had Kevin Butler and the Slim which was able to change it's fortunes at just the right time. Throw in some of the most clever advertisments of all time that appealed to gamers in just the right way and you've got your answer.

Plus, it doesn't hurt that world wide, Sony is a much more popular brand as a whole.

All very great points. Great post. This begs the question tho, did Sony do these things because of competition or the good of the gamer (advancements in gaming tech)?

Sony did these things because up to this point (minus the slight hicup with the PS3) they have just had smarter guys working for them who know exactly what the consumer/gamer wants. They've been the Apple of the gaming industry since the PS1 as far as knowing what to release and how to market it the right way... at least with home consoles anyway.

Nintendo created the vehicle, Sony pimped it out. lol

Also most people in the world outside the US refer to gaming consoles as "the playstation". Like moms say "put down that playstation son and go to bed!"

Not too sure about that one. In my experience, most people who aren't familiar with brands just call them video games and then go on a diatribe about Pacman.

I think it must differ depending on where you live. Most non gamers from my experience call it, "the Nintendo!"

I've heard allot of non-gamers calling consoles "the Nintendo" too. But i think "the Playstation/Xbox" is also commonly used. I also hear it being called "the Sega" and even "the Atari" (i know 3 people who call consoles that + me when i was little ).

Impressive, but I feel it will be about 100mill average after this gen.

Sony's first-party games are definitely important, the reason that the PS3 sold as well as it did.

Nothing wrong with having great third-party + excellent first-party games.

it will fall alot in 4 years when the ps5 comes out. the ps4 cant sell 100m+ in 5 years of life.
the hardware is just to weak...

IT would sell for the next 10 years, and 100 million will be an easy target.
