It just hit me the other day that by the time we get the actual "HD Zelda" we will have already gotten:

- Zelda DLC in Sonic Lost World
- Zelda DLC in Mario Kart 8
- Wind Waker HD
- Hyrule Warriors
- Zelda themed costumes in Bayonetta 1 and 2
- Zelda characters in Smash Bros Wii U

Also, Link Between Worlds.

Safe to assume this has been the year of Link?

On one hand, this isn't a particularly new thing, as highlighted by your example of Zelda content in other games. Especially when using Smash Bros, inherently a Nintendo-based crossover franchise, and remakes to illustrate your point. Before the GameCube hosted a ground-up Zelda game, we already had Zelda content in Melee and Ocarina of Time Master Quest, plus Soul Calibur II released right on top of Wind Waker.

On the other hand, I can see a distinct difference here. Link appearing in Mario Kart is a lot different from Smash Bros or a Zelda remake. It's even different from Soul Calibur II in that it's a first-party title. Then you have Bayonetta, Tekken Tag Tournament, Monster Hunter 4, etc, where the 'guest appearance' isn't by Link himself (as was the case in Soul Calibur), but simply a costume worn by another character to emulate Link. I think I prefer the former case, where it feels like Nintendo is expanding their own universe -- especially since making him DLC makes Link feel more like a guest character than a permenant fixture in the series.

I think the Samus love in Bayonetta and Monster Hunter is a better example. It's proof-positive that the franchise is still on Nintendo's mind, still on the burner, even though there hasn't been a release in the series (new or remake) in over 4 years. Contrast it with the abundance of Captain Falcon or Ness costumes in these collaborations... hmmmm........ yeah.

Knew I'd forgotten one, thanks.

I was including only Wii U examples. "HD" Zelda. ;)

If remakes count, how about NES Remix 1 & 2? I suppose it would be unfair to count Virtual Console games.

Nah, its cool...its just little fanservice stuff, nothing wrong with it.

As long as the aesthetics mix, I don't really mind. Link worked really well in Soul Calibur II, for instance, and Yoshi themed levels seemed natural in Sonic. The Bayonetta costumes looked stupid to me, though I wasn't really interested in that game in the first place, so it's not like it hurts my opinion any. Samus in Monster Hunter is something I'm not so sure about. The Link costume works well in that universe (part of why I pre-ordered it actually), and there are plenty of talking animals to make Isabelle believable. Metroid, though? I don't understand how that would work...it seems like an entirely different universe from Monster Hunter.

Though, I also think it's a bit unfair to treat character costumes as the same as actual character cameos. The latter can dilute the brand if over-exposed (as opposed to random nods here and there), but I don't think there's anything wrong with the former. If anything, Nintendo has a huge enough legacy, that references to their characters within other games shouldn't be frowned upon IMO. Just as long as it doesn't ruin the tone of course.

It's good as a Nintendo fan.

I would love to see Fatal Frame V with Luigi or Daisy costume. :D

Hang on let me make you forget.

By now we have Link in Mario Kart, Sonic Lost World, Tekken Tag Tournament, and Bayonetta 1 & 2, Samus in Monster Hunter 4 and Bayonetta 1 &2, etc.

In my humble opinion, it's getting to the point where it just seems cheap, lazy, and devalues the characters through oversaturation.

They have done cross overs before. Nothing is wrong with it to me. If these were bad games maybe but the games are good or are going to be good.

Link in Mario Kart is awesome though.

To me he's so out of place it hurts. I'll never play him.

Yes because a plumber race a turtle dragon has made since all these years. Get over it. When I was a kid and saw some of the crazy things that happened in mortal kombat I just knew to expect what ever crazy thing happens in games. If you can not expect the crazy maybe you are starting to lose the magic of what makes this media great.

They seem out of place in certain games for sure. Samus in MH4 looks amazing though.
