A review embargo is never good news, hopefully it isn't too bad...

Some people are already playing it, and are praising its gameplay. That doesn't sound too bad to me.

People loved the first few hours of Destiny when they played the beta too. There is a lot that could go wrong, i.e not enough content on release, rigid gameplay, repetition, etc. that would be hard to pinpoint after just a few hours of playing.

Like I said though, I might be wrong. From my experience though, almost every game that has a review embargo has turned out to have less than stellar reviews. There is absolutely no reason for an embargo if you are comfortable with the game reviews, since even halfway positive reviews generate a ton of hype.

So what you're saying now is that embargos are good for us because they ensure reviewers continue playing the game instead of rushing for clicks with an early review?

Driveclub doesn't have one.. It lifts in 1 or 2 hours if i recall correctly, not at release.

Problem is, still very, very late. A few hours before release does not bode well, since it means that the publisher did not expect the reviews to create positive hype. We'll see though, I've been wrong before.

Or it means BOOM POSITIVE HYPE!!! And better yet you can get it in just a few hours.
This shit can go both ways. If they really thought it would go badly the embargo would be when it releases so many people would already be buying it.

Yeah, no, not even close. Reviewers get the game a long time before everyone else, they usually have enough time to comfortably beat the game and assess it. MMOs are the only real exception, and Driveclub is obviously NOT an MMO.

Positive hype doesn't build instantaneously over just a few hours. You let positive reviews out early, and then allow the hype to build over a few days. Just see Shadow of Mordor for example. The more time between the review and release, the more time people have to learn about the game and make a decision on whether or not to buy it.

There's awfully a lot of similarities in gameplay between Driveclub and Project Gotham Racing. PGR series has always scored above 80 on metacritic but I'm not exactly sure how the reviewers will respond in this day and age towards a spiritual successor ...

Well the true  spiritual succesor to PGR is the Horizon series besides Lucids Games, Playground Games has more ex Bizzare Creations (the creators of PGR) employees then anybody else.

People have had the game for 1 week or more. Servers for online functionality went live tuesday last week. They are in equal footing with the reviewers. Just trying to understand why you want early reviews but want to discard early player impressions.

As for the above poster, Horizon isn't a successor of anything. It's open world and handles nothing like PGR. Apples and oranges.

Btw, is there any driving in cities in DC? Can't remember seeing that...

I'm not discounting player reviews. It's just that player reviews and critic reviews don't always go eye-to-eye.

Like I said, we'll see in a couple of hours.

this will be another case of reviews trash it and gamers love it, i cant wait for my free psplus edition to try it

Why would gamers love it in the first place? And why so defensive? Let's just people try it out and everyone builds up his own mind. This includes reviewers.

poor excuse for a mediocre score.  The case where a game scores too high is far more common.

There are no pros to the gamers by having reviews come out the same day it releases.

Maybe they just wanted it this way as a good chunk of the game is free anyways.
