Forums - Nintendo - Nintendo's Strange Two-Year Journey Into DLC

Paid day-one DLC certainly comes off as sketchy to some gamers. It doesn’t necessarily clash with Iwata’s promises, though, as long as those courses weren’t intentionally cut out of the main game to be sold separately. (I reached out to Nintendo yesterday for clarification on this point, but haven’t heard back yet.)

I think it does. It it's ready to be available day-one, it could be on the disc or at least in a day-one patch, so it was cut. People like to put Nintendo in some kind of pedestal but they are pretty much like every publisher. Anyway, I don't think day-one DLC and on-disc DLC are wrong and here's why.

All "day-one DLC and on-disc DLC" controversy just shows that gamers don't have a clue about how you calculate costs for a project, like developing a game. You will sum um what you pay for the workforce involved, any investment in 3rd party work, the degradation cost of the used equipment, licensing fees, distribution costs, marketing and so on. After you get a value, you add what you want to profit and that's it. Now, you will think if you can get all that money selling the game. If the answer is no, you will scale back its budget or simply cancel it.

Any DLC you did will demand that you either use more workers to do it in the same time than the game would be done without it (paying more salaries, taxes and using more equipment) or you can use the same amount of workers for more time (paying more salaries, taxes and using more time for the equipments). It wasn't free, you have to pay for it. If it had to be free, it wouldn't be done because it isn't logical from a financial standpoint.

The picture showing Wario says it all, it is exactly what happens and it will get much, much worse in future games.

Mario Golf was just the beginning.

If Nintendo employ a similar strategy to the MK8 DLC from now on I would not be displeased. That seems to have been done in the best possible way at a nice price tag. My only complaint is that the game constantly advertises this DLC - even when you've already bought it!

The "you have to wait to start working on DLC until the game it out" argument is so silly to me, it always cracks me up.

All i can say, is Nintendo IMO has done DLC right so far, and its been a LONG time since I've been eager for DLC (mario kart and hyrule warriors).

There's an easy way around this though so you don't have people bitching about day 1 DLC, just wait a week. Seriously develop it prior to the games release it can even be done before the game releases, nobody will bitch though if it releases a week after the games release. Same with on disc dlc, just remove it from the disc and nobody will know better.

Try 25+ years
They had add on content on Famicom. DLC with BS Zelda. DLC online with Nintendo 64 DD games in Japan.

Mario Golf 3DS is my only problem with all Nintendo DLC's. That said, I hate when people put Nintendo in some pedestal, because they want our money like every other company

True, but nothing like it has been now, and most of that back then ....nobody even knew about. Let alone even know about the 64 DD!

Doesn't matter. Ignorance doesn't take away the fact they been doing DLC longer than anyone. Hell they even had a Lan system with Famicom. With Xband SNES and Genesis were online and offcially supported by 3rd party games yet people want to act like online began on Xbox even tho XBL was modeled after SEGANET. Genesis and Saturn had DLC and Skies of Arcadia had a new area by DLC on Dreamcast and Shenmue had the Passport disc. Articles like this should do some research first. This is just shit I know and have known for years. Some one who does the job of so called gaming journalism should know this and yet almost everyone on these profession sites don't know jack. The least they could do is google it.

Well, the Layton DLC wasn't much more than puzzles and it was quite a lame attempt at DLC. Don't get me wrong, it's free, but there weren't that many different types of puzzles. Each week you'd get a new difficulty level of the same puzzles..
