Well...to be fair, he really only saved the world twice. The Oracle games count as one because the only threat of the world being destroyed was after both games were put together. And Link's Awakening was just him getting off the island. |
He saved 4 of the world's Kindgoms then. One in the future and the past. Yeah, Koholint Island is just a spoiler alert he had to get off of, but still.

Why does it matter? The Hero of Time failed and the possibility of any other Link doing so hasn't even been considered. |
The most accepted theory is that he only failed because Zelda sent him back differently (using the Ocarina) than how he does normally (using the sword) making him disappear from the sword timeline and allowing Ganon to win. Not really a "link wasnt good enough" scenario.

I prefer to say that Link destroyed the world in Link's Awakening. He certainly ended a world, in a manner of speaking.
Anyway, he rescued a deity, bringing some degree of peace to the (actual) world.

It's complicated. And sad. Dont wanna spoil potential players so I'll probably leave it there. I'd have loved for this to get a graphical upgrade remake but I'm sure many others would hate that.

I feel like the statute of limitations for spoilers on Link's Awakening has got to be up by now. The game came out over 20 years ago, and it was the first game released on the 3DS Virtual Console over 3 years ago. If you haven't played it by now, you have no one to blame but yourself.
Plus, the plot isn't all that complicated. It's pretty straightforward, and the game is pretty honest about it right off the bat. It's obvious enough what's going on from an early point in the game that if you hype it up to have some great plot twist, players will be disappointed. I think it's better to just present the game as it is and note that it is one of the better applications of that trope.

It's been out a while, but I always try to keep possible people surprised either way, since you never know. Someone just buyinng a 3DS as thier first console would have missed out, for instance.
It might be me making up for the fact that I somehow managed to not get numerous things I like spoiled. I'm only halfway through Lost and still have no idea how it ends. And I dont know much of the story for most Zelda games I havent played, except Zelda 2, sort of.

I mean, if I was talking to someone one-on-one and they said they didn't know anything about Link's Awakening, I'd tell them to stop talking to me right now and get on that, and I certainly wouldn't spoil it. But here in a thread about Zelda on a gaming website, you'll get no sympathy from me if you expect not to find spoilers!
Zelda 2 doesn't have much of a story to spoil. With most games, I'm more concerned about spoiling the level design. I don't mind knowing the story beats so much as long as I don't know how to get through a dungeon before I even get there. Depends on the game.

I love world building, so maps, overworlds and story are the things I dont want spoiled the most. I am a major Zelda timeline junkie, after all. And I mainly just know the Princess asleep thing, and that Dark Link is the final boss for some reason. But now this is getting a smidge off topic.

But then wouldn't that be a "Link wasn't around" scenario (similar to the events prior to WW) instead of "Link was defeated"?
