It's naturally going to take longer for a system to catch up and pass another in terms of software rather than hardware, the gap isn't going to close linearly.  You only buy one console (typically) but you go on to buy several pieces of software for it.  The fact that it took a little less than a year for the ps4 to pass the wii u in software sales is impressive for sony and damming for nintendo.

What do you mean when you say, "So people only buy duplicates on Nintendo systems?"  Software is naturally bought in significantly higher quantities than hardware and the rate that software is bought for video games rises incrementally with each new release.  The wii u has had more time to develop its library and has an additional holiday season on the ps4, it was always going to take longer to catch up on software.

 

And you accusing anyone of confirmation bias is, well, laughable.

attach ratios for systems build over time. It took more time to match total software sales because it had longer to have more games per system.

well i dont see how it is testament. PS4 should not have passed Wii U at all SW or HW considering it had a year headstart and was and is still more expensive. And all in the same year

If you want to make this comparison fair, you can compare attach ratios after a the same amount of time in release, so if we compare the attach ratio of the PS4 now and the Wii U a year ago:

PS4: 29.883/10.81= 2.76

Wii U: 9.278/3.455= 2.69

With this more fair comparison the PS4 has sold more software per hardware unit than the Wii U (and the PS4 has had less time in Japan so this comparison still favours the Wii U a little).

That is still testament to Nintendo's strength as a publisher.

To support my figures I'd have to whip out my "ratio by publisher" thread I made a few months ago.


I'm sure you are right about that, but that would be a completely different issue that should get its own thread.

It's true that Nintendo sells more 1st party games than both Sony or XB. But it's untrue to apply that to every case, considering both's past gen. Take it for an example both massive 820M and 880M respectively for PS3 and Wii. PS3 though had digital games its whole life, unlike wii, surpassing Wii SW numbers really easily, yet being about 16M behing in HW numbers.

 



...Let the Sony Domination continue with the PS4...
