People don't buy all the games at once, they buy games over time, and people who own WiiU's have owned it for far more time and have had longer to buy more games. The PS4 has only been around for less than a year, there are only so many games people will buy during that time.

There are also more people buying said less games, so the argument goes both ways.

The bottom line is that, while the PS4 reached Nintendo HW sooner, it took them a bit more time to match Nintendo's SW sales, being testament to Nintendo's ability to sell games. A good counter-argument are bundled games, but these exist on all consoles.

If you want to make this comparison fair, you can compare attach ratios after a the same amount of time in release, so if we compare the attach ratio of the PS4 now and the Wii U a year ago:

PS4: 29.883/10.81= 2.76

Wii U: 9.278/3.455= 2.69

With this more fair comparison the PS4 has sold more software per hardware unit than the Wii U (and the PS4 has had less time in Japan so this comparison still favours the Wii U a little).
