Forums - Gaming - Microsoft buying Minecraft for $2.5B has to be the biggest gaming news of 2014!

Kind of like that Mio commercial in the US. "This changes everything" except it doesn't. It means nothing actually.

I though that the facebook buying oculus rift was bigger, but okay.

"Hardware design isn’t about making the most powerful thing you can.
Today most hardware design is left to other companies, but when you make hardware without taking into account the needs of the eventual software developers, you end up with bloated hardware full of pointless excess. From the outset one must consider design from both a hardware and software perspective."

Just the biggest number in a news.

For gamers it just means next games from an indie dev will be ms exclusive,

No, the biggest gaming news is still Facebook buying Oculus.

I have to disagree, the biggest gaming news is the October 3rd release date of Smash.

Technically MS didn't buy just Minecraft; they bought something bigger that contained (in a way) Minecraft. But yeah, unless something really surprising happens this year, I doubt anything could be bigger.

Well... You are right but in all honesty, Minecraft is 99% of MS interest in this transaction :)
And it is a good deal.

And yes it is the biggest news imo.

anyone wasting 2.5bn on a 1 hit wonder studio created by a guy that ripped off other peoples ideas and whose game just ended up famous because of luck and a great community seems to be the bigger news to me.

well, now only time will tell if Microsoft will make Mojang keep its shine or if it will be the next RARE...

Mojang didn't really have a shine in the first place... Minecraft was made (and become a success) prior to their creation. All Mojang have done is infrequently release updates and make something called "Scrolls" for which there is currently very little interest.

I expect Minecraft will be fine, it may even end up better for having been bought, but i'm still of this opinion this was a colossal waste of money on MS's part. Oh well though, it ain't my money they're spending

Interestingly, some news (including that reported here on VGChartz) says that Microsoft expects to break even on the deal by June 2015! That is plain ole crazy.

Why is this big news and surprising? Companies buy studios all the time and we are yet to see what effect this studi... IP will do as an MS exclusive going forward. They should have secured the deal before the game came to PS4 though.

Having said that, do people realize that the creators of minecraft left the studio after this purchase?
