Forums - Microsoft - Microsoft to announce Mojang (Minecraft) buyout on Monday, for $2.5b

so they will make the most profits from digital on ps4

and get hardware sale boosts by pysical copys on xb1

Do you, or anyone else, think that Minecraft actually sells systems?

To me, it seems the other way around.

It's not: "OMG, Minecraft is coming out on PS4/XOne/Vita/Tablet/Toaster, gotta buy the console!!!"

But: "Hey, I already got a PS4/XOne/Vita/Tablet/Toaster, now that Minecraft is out, I'll get the game!"

Crazy money for a franchise that has almost certainly reached its' peak already, and the main creative force there is expected to leave as soon as the acquisition goes through. Can't imagine it selling X1 systems given how easy it is to run on practically any PC or laptop so MS must have some other major plans for it.

If they wanted to pull Minecraft on PS4/3 tuesday, I'm sure they could. Depends on the deal MS make with Mojang but effectively, what can Sony do?.

I'd imagine it would depend what kind of contract Sony signed with Mojang.

OT: That's an obscene amount of money for effectively buying Minecraft and little else (unless a sequel is already being worked on - seems unlikely given Notch's work ethic).

Very happy about this deal.
The more they spend on that game, the less will be leftover to moneyhat those games that are of interest to me.

But now it leaves me wondering --- if they have so much money to waste on one old game, why not give Square Enix a few million more and make Tomb Raider fully exclusive exclusive? Surely they could have afforded $50 million?

Not really, MS will clearly spend what they want to and it isn't a case of "this or that". It already says in the link, this isn't for Xbox it's for Mobile.

Yeah, you arer right. Makes me even happier, because they are clearly focused on mobile (as their mission statement says anyway), but still this means $2.5 billion less available for XBox.

And that makes me very happy, because I would hate to lose ability to play my favorite games.

A long shot, but my ultimate hope is that they continue moneyhatting mobile, and that the money for it comes from the sale and/or shutdown of the XBox division.

This is such a weird development to me. Persson has been hostile in the past to corporate giants and Mojang, if memory serves me correctly, has on more than one occasion rejected outside funding and buyout attempts. On the other side, I'm curious what Microsoft plans to do with Minecraft. Does it plan to make Minecraft spin-offs for Xbox or just cash in on the original game's profits and growing media empire?

It's not $2.5b less though when they have $77b. My point is going forward, if they wanted to buy Taketwo for $3b or whatever it's worth, this deal would not mean they couldn't "Oh shit we already spent $2b on Minecraft, can't do that" wouldn't happen.

That's a great dream buddy, not gonna happen. MS are clearly dedicated to it and don't need to worry about its performance $$$ wise.

Still against this move MS, I'm sorry but 2.5 billion should of been spent on someone huge like Take-Two or something not Mojang -_______-

I literally just bought Minecraft PS4 just incase they pulled it when the deal is announced

Im really curious to see where they take the IP in the future.

We've certainly had games taken down before due to buyouts (Midway, THQ ect).

Playstation will not be a huge driver of Minecraft sales imo, so they should pull it and advertise it as XB1/360/PC/Mobile exclusive.

PS3 version has been legging quite well, and with the PS4 being the market leader by quite a distance, Minecraft will naturally have great legs on the platform.

Minecraft sells to the mass market. PS4 is the current mass market console of choice. Game would do great for MS profit-wise, if kept on PS platforms.

The main question is though, will they make it MS exclusive going forward? Part of the appeal with Minecraft, one of the reasons it is the best selling game ever, is because its available on every viable platform. To stop that would be a huge hit to the franchise IMO.

One can always hope. $77 billion surely didn't help Zune, $2.5 billion for Minecraft will hardly raise Windows Phone from the deep pits of last place, and that's why I hope they don't continue taking games away from people by paying companies in an effort to gain ground.
I actually really hope this Minecraft deal succeeds, that they keep focusing on mobile and tablets and servers and OS, so that they move their paws away from my hobby. It's a completely selfish hope, but their money already denied me the pleasure of playing Tomb Raider at launch, I don't want them to mess with more of my favorite franchises.
I hope they buy all the Minecrafts, Fruit Ninjas and Flappy Birds in the world, if that would mean that they'll stop ruining my console gaming enjoyment.
