Well not really acutally. It all comes down to the devs focus.

If the game is not trying to be Crysis or  Metro or whatever 4k is pretty doable. A JRPG with anime graphics could actually run at 4k.


On PC I can play Borderlands2 @ 4k. I dont have a 4k monitor but I still have the benefit of the high resolution because I see not a singly aliasing "step" etc. (it gets downsampled)

I have yet to encounter a single UnrealEngine3 game I cannot play at 4k. The engine is old and does not need alot of ressources tho. It still does its job because as long as the game has good art style or art direction it looks great.

4k would also be doable on XBO and PS4 but devs chose effects over resolution. I prefer no aliasing and good resolution over effects tho. (Id rather play "artistic" games like SkywardSword with low polycount etc @4k than a Skyrim with crap textures @720p"

Yea the 4k part of this article is bull. The consoles may be 5 or so years behind mid range gaming hardware, but 4k isn't really a thing yet with most PC. I think when more people start upgrading to GPUs with more memory, you'll see a push to higher res monitors.  My guess at least 2 years before PC adopt higher res. Consoles are fine with 1080p atm. PS5 will be 4k; if there is one.

Yeah no. While there are some TV as low as $339 there is also some more expensive than some homes.

If you want cutting edge get a PC

Rather impressive that Forbes can afford the services and profound insight of a time travelling journalist.

What hardware do you use? Looking at tests, all single GPU cards struggle to achieve, let alone keep, a framerate above 30 at 4k.

It's obvious that I'm not talking about games with outdated graphics. I'm talking contemporary games and since you still have to put at least 1000€ on the table to have current games run at a proper framerate it's still a long way off. I'm talking at least 5 years until you can run games with mainstream cards(~300€) at 60fps on a consistant basis.

By that time they probably discovered full ray tracing which isn't very nice to even high end cards.

Let's just hope they also discover how to properly scale menus when that time comes.
