Quitting when things get tough and walking away=modern gamers. Mentally weak. No perseverance etc. I checked you age and according to your profile, it says you're 28? I'm guessing you got into gaming later in life? Because I'm 35, not TOO much older than you, but I'm the NES generation. ALL games were fucking tough. You either had to meet that toughness head on mentally and persevere, or you weren't going to be any good. So it's beyond me how you managed to develop such a weak will... unless again, you started gaming during the PS1 or PS2 generation.
I would think, if you grew up on SNES (not as hard as the NES games, but tough enough), that you would be able to handle dying over and over again.
I do agree that games are way easy compared to the old days. They are extremely easy. Hell you don't even run out of lifes anymore. You can keep trying without haivng to worry about starting a complete level over again. Hell, you don't even need health packs in a lot of games. Stay hidden in an area you and replenish your health. It is one thing I love about Demon's Souls/Dark Souls. It is a real challenge and feels good when its accomplished. With that said, I don't completely mind were gaming has went but I don't want hand holding and I do want to have some challenge. It is good to have a mix and a choice with difficulty and I can just brag about it with trophies and achievements if I really care.
I don't have time to beat and play everything on hard or have the time for every game to be that way. There are more gamers than you don't realize are the same way because like me, they have kids and they have jobs. Those that you are talking about are a small minority. There isn't a lot of them. We do appreciate it when a game like Demon's Souls do come around and embrace it.

Elitism strikes again

Wow... This is a elitist comment. I'm not you, and you're not me. I have different tastes. I don't get a satisfaction to repeating a boss fight 20 times, just because the next area kills me, because of low health. That's it. When something becomes dumb hard, it's pointless. When it's hard on the fact of stratagy, I like it. If it's there to just be a ass towards the user. Remember that Pizza pick up in NES Turtles 1. With the closing walls area. That's asshole nonsense. it's not fun anymore, to me. And this usually ends up being the majorities view towards games. Which is why game makers started making things easier. Except half the time they would go too far. Hence the easy stuff problem now. Skyward Sword is too easy. But I don't want games like Ninja Gaiden.
And honestly what is the difference from a check point to a game over screen? Except that one bypasses the area that you don't want to redo. People want a check point, save point, whatever, after a boss fight, because it's the area that people worked hard and cleared. Not get erased all because of a lame reason after the boss fight. Not to mention go back to the main menu, reload their save etc. What's the advantage of me replaying the QTE's in RE4's cutscenes? Just because I fucked up on the boss fight? I want to replay what I fucked up on. Not dodging the same knife throw at Leon.
It be like arguing Pokemon is cheap, since you can save at any point. But Final Fantasy is hard. Because you have limited save locations. The recent Fire Emblem game has the right way of doing the balance between murdering hard that you like, and the way I like to play. You want perminate deaths, set it on harder mode. I never liked that in the older FE game. When they introduced the difficuity option, I was much more opened to playing the series. I only gave Path of Radiance a chance. No matter what they wanted to happen. I'd just reset the game, if I failed and lost people in the match. Bypassing their limitation anyway. But I never went back to the series, till the 3DS. I jsut didn't want to waste my time with resetting the game countless times. But by making me not lose my players that I care about. All because a AI got lucky. I get more invested into the game.

That's pretty dumb, but when you look at the comments... Today's games hold your hand all the time! ...reminds me of my grandpa talking about how I dress or talk. (I started gaming in 1996, so I'm not a complete newb either, but I don't look down on younger gamers for not enjoying the games I used to play back then, because I realize that's just nostalgia value and these game suck compared to today's games...) |
No because I in my mid 20s was part of all of that and I completely agree with them.
I think its more that new maisntreamers uhm pardon me "gamers" look down on our old games so we look down on them.
Its not nostalgia crap its "what did this game achieve for the time it was released".
Back in the "young days" of gaming you didnt have so many "professional game designers" but yet their stuff was on par or even better than today.
e.g ocarina of time had day night circles was the first 360° adventure with 360° degree movement invented z-targeting, etc etc.
Today alot of times not devs make the games but publishers and SHAR(S)EHOLDERS because they want short term profit and dont give a fuck about the games at all. And especially not about the customer because other than in the 80s and even in the 90s not gamers made games for other gamers but as I said "contract workers" make games for publishers/shareholders.
Thank god indie exists if the big ones cant come up with good stuff because its to risky for the greedy idiots they at least somewhat copy the small ones if the idea is successful.
The problem is that alot of people call themselves gamers without being gamers. Its like when everyone wanted to be EMO the real emos were so annyoed they then started to call themselves SCENE instead. Or how neonazis have exactly nothing to do with Nazis from the past. ITs a new group that jumped on the train because it was suddenly "COOL" A new group thats not really part of the old one yet thinks it can decide whats cool and whats not whats childish and whats for adults etc. (everything thats not bloody;grey or brown is for kids ROFL) Sure the new group outnumbers the old one but that does not change anything at all. I mean Tetris and Mario were hardcore in the 80s and now they are casual? ROFL.

Today's games are far from superior except for graphics and sound. Gameplay was harder and better back in the 16-bit and 8-bit days. Games required more precise timing, memory, and skill. There were not so many.easy cheats available either. In short, gamers from the 80's and early 90's had to be superior gamers to today's gamers just to beat many games. We earned our victories whereas now it is almost handed to gamers.
The golden age of gaming was in the late eighties through the mid nineties. If only we still had those type of great games with today's graphics!

Uhhh... you sure use a lot of words to just say "I'm desperately searching for ways to make myself feel special."
There's liking old games (nothing wrong about that, of course) and there's saying people who don't like the same games you do are not "real gamers". No true Scotsman much?
I'm not of the older generation, but i started out gaming on the Snes and N64 thanks to my brothers' pcs and emulators at the time. I do look down at newer generation gamers as being less skilled, but not really out of some sense of superiority. It's just simple facts.
Not like my retro gaming skillz haven't deteriorated over the years anyway.

My first game was donkey kong country, witnessing dem graphics at a friends house.. I was blown away... Then got n64 with mario 64... Does that not give me more gaming experience than those who started out with madden on xbox or assasins poop :-__S"
