Forums - Gaming - Are you tired of the older generation of gamers feeling superior?

older people are dumb

Bet reminder: I bet with Tboned51 that Splatoon won't reach the 1 million shipped mark by the end of 2015. I win if he loses and I lose if I lost.

I thought todays games were less punishing than old games but older games aren't so hard if you know what you are doing. At least if you watch speedruns of retro games, it seems that way

Prediction: Switch 2 will outsell the PS5 by 2030

I'm not of the older generation, but i started out gaming on the Snes and N64 thanks to my brothers' pcs and emulators at the time. I do look down at newer generation gamers as being less skilled, but not really out of some sense of superiority. It's just simple facts.

Not like my retro gaming skillz haven't deteriorated over the years anyway.

It's not simple facts. It's neither simple nor a fact.

By newer generation i mean gamers who grew up with ps2/ps3. Yeah, it's prettg obvious they'd be less skilled than retro gamers, because today's games ask a lot less of their players in regards to skill and determination than yesterday's, with few exceptions.

Yeah... and then they're not less skilled. They may be less skilled as Ryu Hayabusa or Simon Belmont because they didn't play those games as much, buy I'd say their skill in modern games match or exceed the old-timers. In the ranks of the best pro gamers, there's just as many guys aged 20-22 (way after the NES/SNES era) as there is 30-year-olds.

Maybe casual gamers skew the average, but the HC crowd is better than ever in my opinion.

But how many of those pro gamers are fighting game players, or quake players, of even Starcraft? Just because they're young doesn't mean they didnt hone their skills playibg older series.

But thats besides the point, pro players are one in a million. In the end, the skills required to play modern games, eapecially modern console games, pale in comparison to what was seen in the early days. These days, if you beat a game like Uncharted, or Halo, no one bats an eye -- it's pretty much a given. You don't even have to be good. Beating a game in the olden days was a matter of pride. You had to master the game's mechanics through trial and error. Games that could be beaten in under an hour by a master could take weeks to conquer for an average player. New games just don't compare when it comes to difficulty, and the satisfaction that comes from completion, if you ask me. With competitive games being an exception--though, once again with console games, the skill ceiling is often set relatively low for new titles.

No because I in my mid 20s was part of all of that and I completely agree with them.

I think its more that new maisntreamers    uhm pardon me  "gamers" look down on our old games so we look down on them.

Its not nostalgia crap  its   "what did this game achieve for the time it was released".

(...)

Uhhh... you sure use a lot of words to just say "I'm desperately searching for ways to make myself feel special."

There's liking old games (nothing wrong about that, of course) and there's saying people who don't like the same games you do are not "real gamers". No true Scotsman much?

This has nothing to do with being desperate tho. No need to tell myself that I am special because most people that dont like mainstream actually are. (even if special is just used as SPECIAL rather than superior) but that works both ways. Some people feel special because they are e.g vegetarians. And the "normalos" think the vegetarians are stupid and the "normalos" are superior.

I avoid mainstream as much as possible. Pop culture, drinks or food, I dont like chart music and dont like MichaelBay movies etc.I hate DLC (no addons tho! Episodes from Liberty City, MK8 stuff or Borderlands2 Tiny Tinas Assalt on DragonsKeep is awesome)

But on the other hand I "dis"like dude-bros as much as emos or punks or hipsters or whatever. I see no point in trying to be anti-mainstream by being part of another stream. Whats the point in being an individual when you want to be like other people?
I do my own thing and do have  punks and emos and dude-bros and hipsters  etc etc. all of them as friends. They dont like each other sometimes but thats their problem not mine.

But enough of me :)

Not all games today are bad.
There is new games I really like but those are rare the most games are just meh IMO.Because they are a completely unpolished mess.

I like Borderlands1+2 (dont like PreSequel because it seems to be a cashgrab) I like Xenoblade. If GTA5 would not be a 25FPS game I would also like that (Waiting for the PC version)

IMO Respect where respect is due and if people dont understand that retro gaming deserves respect I dont have a high opinion on them. I for myself HATE Super Mario Bros. I cannot play that game because of those strange controls. But I understand why they are the way they are and would never say the game is crap even tho it took me a long time to finish that game.

And if you liked old school gaming you cant tell me that you are not annoyed by the fact that todays games are made for mainstreamers and so everyone has to deal with streamlining because people cant think for themselves etc.

I never played any games released before 1995 so... unless you consider that old-school enough... I never played NES/SNES games, I was a PSX kid.

And I'm afraid my taste in games evolved with the times perfectly. I played (relatively) old games, hard and unforgiving and I enjoyed the crap out of them and I play today's "streamlined games for mainstreamers" and enjoy the crap out of those, too. So... no, I'm not annoyed at all.

See, mainstream is mainstream for a reason. I don't really care if what I enjoy is mainstream or not. I like non-mainstream music, I like old cars, I'm interested in things nobody else cares about... but I do watch Michael Bay movies (except Transformers, I mean come on ). There is a thin line between someone who by coincidence dislikes everything mainstream and a confirmed contrarian... I don't know where to put you yet.

Oh, and Super Mario... you see, most modern platformers are better than that in all objective aspects, the only things playing for Mario are that at the time, it was the best of its kind and that we played it as kids. So it really depends on how you define "better games". If you discount "innovation value" and nostalgia value, it's not really that impressive, is it?

This is a fun topic.. I can say im starting to become an old games, been playing over 30 years now and played on about every system. Some points about new games holding your hand more and being easier is partly true.. But for sure there enough new games that will give you a hard time too.

What i personally feel is that old games, lets say SNES and older, are just very unforgiving. Even the hardest game today is easier because of the endless save points and continues.. Even a game like Dark Souls, which gives a good challenge feels less hard than most old games. In the old days, so to speak, it was just a few lives and if you we're lucky you would get a continue.. Game over really meant game over and start all the way from zero again.

I myself enjoyed every generation and already love my PS4. I'm even happy that games became a bit more forgiving and let you save anytime and have checkpoints.. I just don't got the freaking time anymore to spend weeks just to master a game.

And saying young gamers are not as good as old gamers is BS.. Sure they probably suck at SNES/NES/PS1 games, but they will be just as good or even better at the games that we play today. When playing The last of Us online i sometimes feel like a freaking noob lol, while i had no problems to finish the game at Hard difficulty.

If you ask me young gamers will always be better at new games than old gamers.. Already simply because of the fact they usually have way more time to get good at it compared to us older dudes with our jobs and family commitments.

People complaining about the difficulty of todays games should just not play at all, or just hook up your NES to your HDTV!.. And i always thought games were for fun and entertainment, with a slight challenge.. If i want something really hard to do i will go try to understand women or quatum physics :D
