Forums - Gaming - Dreamcast turns 15!

I know this is a stupid idea, but personally I think it would be great if Sega re-released the Dreamcast for something like 99$, with a HD, HDMI wireless network, and digital-only downloads of their games. Then it would become a great console for developers to release new games on :).

Bump to celebrate

The Sega Dreamcast is one of my favorite consoles and I enjoyed a great many games on it: Shenmue, Crazy Taxi, Grandia II, Skies Of Arcadia, Resident Evil: Code Veronica, NBA2K, NFL2K, Daytona U.S.A., Jet Grind Radio, Tony Hawk 2, Sonic, Sega Swirl and so many others. For a console with a short life, they released a ton of amazing games on it. The only weakness was the terrible controllers.

It's sad that the Sega Dreamcast was the victim of both Sega's disastrous past with the Sega CD, 32X and Saturn and Sony's dominance. It deserved better. Still, the console is far from dead in my eyes and if you come across one somewhere, you should buy it and some games and see how good this machine really is.

Happy Birthday Sega Dreamcast, I still play this console and online on my rare broadband adapter.. Makes me so proud :') .The best console ever made.

I'm thinking about getting a Dreamcast, but I have no experiance whatsoever with SEGA's consoles. Any game recomendations?

Skies of Arcadia, Phantasy Star Online, and Grandia 2 if you like JRPGs

Sonic Adventure 1&2 are classics although I don't feel like they've aged well

Crazy Taxi 1&2 are fun arcade games

There's a bunch of fighting games if you like those, like Marvel VS Capcom 2, Street fighter 3rd strike, and Soul Calibur

Jet Set/grind Radio and Shenmue might also interest you.

Don't forget Project Justice, Street Fighter Alpha 3, and Capcom Vs. SNK. There were so many. LOL The games you've listed is pretty much what made the Dreamcast.

Didnt the 2K everything start on Dreamcast? The best console back then oh yea.

My Dreamcast is STILL in mint condition. I loved it so much that I bought 2 of them. One was stolen (when I was in the Air Force) and the other I never opened until last year. :) All of my games are in mint as well. The Dreamcast was so underrated, in my opinion. Had stellar games, yet it still sold poorly. I hated the PS2 for a long time because of it. Hahaha Then I ended up getting one.

Well anyway, still love my Dreamcast and hope one day Sega makes another console. HBD Dreamcast!!!

I hate to be the party pooper here but sales were fairly sub-par (in terms of the revenue Sega needed) up against the N64 and PS1 loooooong before the PS2 was released. It was pretty much the biggest botch in the Japanese market besides Xbox systems.

Sales were sub par because of the hype Monster for the PS2, Emotion Engine, Toy Story quality graphics, Final Fantasy X, Metal Gear Solid 2 and Gran Turismo though.

There is no doubt that the sheer hype for the PS2 definitely put off prospective Dreamcast adopters. Dat MGS2 trailer stole E3 2000 despite the epic showing Sega had.

Yeah that fake ass hype was bullshit. Sega killed themselves more than anything though. How in the world could you make software that could be burned on a blank disc???? I think the pirates made more money than Sega lol

Even if they'd just do a limited re-run of the dreamcast with an HDMI port and a GD-R reader. I'd think they'd sell some units.

I agree. Anecdotal, I know, but I would buy atleast two of them and both my brother and nephew would buy one each :).

And again, in the same time period, the Dreamcast was not leading the market share. You seem to be forgetting that the PS1, N64 and even the Game Boy line were all still very relevant platforms between 1999-2001, there were huge IPs for all of them and ultimately pulled in better numbers than the DC. It would somewhat make sense if the DC was the only active platform on the market, but it clearly wasn't.

To put this into perspective, attributing the Dreamcast's financial shortcomings to the PS2 is like holding the DS or PSP responsible for the N-Gage never taking off.

Nah sales were fine in Japan until PS2 was announced and we more than fine in NA. Considering that for a year after launch PS2 was nothing more than a glorified DVD player, I can see why some people may hate the PS2...

I'd hate game pirates more personally as they killed the game sales for the system.

1) You're probably thinking of the Saturn, honestly, it's presence was borderline non-existent in Japan.

2) If people were buying PS2s just to watch DVDs on it, it would've been a financial disaster for Sony, they cost about $500 to manufacture at launch and relied on licensed software to recoup. Maybe the games available were relatively average compared to what the PS2 had over the next 5 years, but it still would've been enough for Sony to get going.

3) I was one of those people who took advantage of the piracy. Before I'm slandered for that, I was also one of those people with my PS1. Go figure.

You have to realize that Sega were in overwhelming debts when they released the Dreamcast and needed DS-esque attach rates to get them back in the black. The fact that it couldn't even outsell the N64 left them with no choice but to pull the plug. No idea where you got this 'more than fine' rose-tinted sob story from.
