Indeed it was a great succes in the casual gaming market, but not the ''hardcore'' gaming market. And apart from some of Nintendo's own offerings, only casual software sold well on it. For the big gaming franchises like GTA, Assassins Creed's, Destiny etc. it just doesn't matter if Nintendo's consoles sell 20m or 100m. Those games don't sell well on it anyway. The install base of their consoles just don't really tell anything about the state of the gaming industry, or if developers will be able to make back the budget of big AAA games.

That's why i think the comparison is about Playstation and Xbox. Nintendo's huge drop off in sold consoles pretty much effects Nintendo and Nintendo alone, to the hardcore gaming market and most developers it just doesn't matter much.

The "hardcore" market and the "casual" market are both a part of the same market that all console developers want on board. There is no splitting them up. The PS3 and the Xbox 360 were both aimed at the "casual" market, as are the PS4 and the Xbox One.

The most surprising thing for me is that 3DS and NDS were so close. Unexpected.

I don't hate Microsoft, I don't hate PC,
I don't prefer Sony, I don't prefer Nintendo.
...Ok, I love Nintendo but this is something about tolerance, ok?

I'm a gamer with one of the greatest hobbies and I want to share this greatness with everyone.

THe thing is, it doesnt matter what they was aimed for.  Yes, casual players arent as abundants as they were with the wii but that is no reason to ignore the wii.

Yeah they want them, but they don't depend on casuals to sell decently.

And who is to decide what is and isnt a "casual" gamer?

PS4 will, just like it's PS2 and PS1 brethern did

PS4 to Wii comparison is still a little skewed since it's still undertracked here..

It's not about casuals gamers, it's about the software. Games like Destiny are considered hardcore, games lik eJust Dance are casual. The first isn't even released on a Nintendo console or would sell very well, the last one does.

Even if Nintendo would release something as big as Wii Sports for Wii-U and it would sell 100M+ it doesn't influence the release or development of games like Destiny.

Personally if you want to compare generations i would ignore the Wii since that number is heavily inflated by the casuals going for the motion control hype. It really doesn't tell you anything about the actual console gaming market.

Comparing PS3/360 to PS4/XOne this gen is doing well so far.

We should ignore the Wii because it was a gigantic success with the market it was aimed at. Yep.

it was an anomaly and not the product of a normal gaming market.  It had an abnormal selling pattern and sold to a different audience than ANY of the current consoles are aimed at.  In other words those people are not part of the gaming market they're just people who happened to buy one game console one time.  Hell some of the grandmas might not even be with us anymore
