Forums - Nintendo - If amiibo is a hit will Nintendo become more of a toy/media company?

I think that might be what happens, and I think what could follow is Nintendo becoming more like the LEGO company.

LEGO has movies, theme parks, theme stores in shopping malls, etc. ... I think Nintendo might be headed down a similar path if amiibo is a big hit.

Perhaps not a Nintendo-only theme park, but I'm sure Universal or Disney would be happy to work with Nintendo on a Nintendo themed attraction/area.

It could become a central part of their business pillars with games perhaps moving into a role of being just one of three pillars -- toys/media (movies and theme parks), gaming (Fusion platform), and quality of life (which I think will be aimed primarily towards senior citizens).

I wouldn't be against this happening.

THe funny thing is Nintendo does everything you've listed. But only with Pokemon

Speaking of amusement parks, why does Europe and China get a Pokemon amusement park/fair  but the US doesn't? : /

These toys and merchandise goes towards the ultimate goal of selling more hardware and software.

Not quite. It's about making more money. If Nintendo can succeed in making money hand over fist making games on its own hardware that also appeal to people (not just kids, but probably that'd be the key mass demographic) who buy merchandise then that is the direction they should go in.

Would people rather they stick to only mario, zelda, smash bros, etc? Because I hate to break it to people, that might no longer cut the mustard. One giant mega hit like pokemon does not overcome an onslaught of other decent sized hit

its all about have multiple sources of revenue. Honestly Nintendo is the only one who can say whether this model can work for them. But I am sure they will keep games on the forefront of their business for as long as they can.

I hope their Amiibos are a huge hit. That way Nintendo will have more money to make more games! A win win situation!!

Today most hardware design is left to other companies, but when you make hardware without taking into account the needs of the eventual software developers, you end up with bloated hardware full of pointless excess. From the outset one must consider design from both a hardware and software perspective."

Nintendo never stopped being a toy company. they see videogames as toys. I think they may invest in anime and cartoons, they kinda took for granted small kids.

The word 'if' should be replaced by 'when'.

And no, it's not going to happen...even though a Nintendo Land theme park will be a licence to print money. A theme park will probably cost them around £5bn to build and staff and they'll make that on merchandising and food alone in a few years.

Considering we're talking about the same company who once were known for cards, rice, and "love" motels, who the hell knows..

That's why I would suggest them partnering with say Universal Studios or maybe Disney. That removes the massive overhead of building the park and gauruntees millions of visitors every year.

It could also coincide with a movie deal with either Universal or Disney. If a "Lego Movie" can be a hit (a movie about a franchise of talking blocks) then I think a "Nintendo Movie" in a similar vein (CGI + comedy/adventure) could be a big hit too. Disney already kinda did this by aping Nintendo archetypes for Wreck It Ralph. I think there's potential too for a Kid Icarus animated series, Zelda live action trilogy/series (seems like every fantasy series from Narnia to Percy Jackson got a shot after LOTR and Harry Potter, why not Zelda?).

Nintendo should expand into the senior citizen market and make senior citizen homes, wheel chairs, walkers and canes! There's nothing more entertaining than watching grandpa make a fool of himself with his walker!

On a serious note... Yeah, I don't think the Amiibos mean Nintendo is going to invest in the toy market.

QoL will probably be heavily centered around seniors actually. The Japanese senior population is massive and holds the majority of the wealth of the country.

I don't think they want to compete head on with Apple/Nike/Samsung for the fitness crowd, senior citizens is a much less competetive market.
