Read the article again maybe.

Also, they have to be careful. They are already being sued for deceptive marketing of Kilzone's resolution...

The article is wrong... showing wrong info... jumping wrong conclusions.

You can say Sony used to spin the numbers in their favor but it is what they showed... 78% of the marketshare in 2014... nobody can deny that because you know it is the reality.

i was the first who told that they ment 2014,it s obvious!i dont know why noone put 2014 in their article's title...

Sony will not let a thing like facts stop them from declaring victory!

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.

The Wii is pretty much dead in Japan, so why does it matter, it's not going to make a practical difference.

Spin, ladies and gentlemen, involves taking a set of information, and shining it through a lens that emphasizes aspects that suit your agenda, and/or deemphasizing aspects that contradict it. It's never telling the whole picture, and instead only telling things that suit your image, the message you're trying to spread and the impression you're trying to make. It is NOT lying.

WhiteEagle posted in the OTHER thread that it would be 'good and fair' to simply compare lifetime sales of the Wii U vs the PS4 in Japan. This isn't true, this is actually spin as well; the full set of data, the 'good and fair' comparison, would be the total sales of both products, their overall performance in hardware, software, a wide-angle look.

Picking any form of filter- "ONLY Japan sales!" "Only sales this year!" "Let's only talk about software sales!" "Let's give a percentage boost as a number but not talk about how many units we ACTUALLY sold!"- is, if spoken either by the company or someone who 'supports' them, spin, because technically, you aren't lying, but you're sure as heck omitting some pertinent details, and trying to create a positive (or negative, depending on the intent) image that might not actually exist outside your self-created bubble.

So, is the spin Sony did any more evil than the spin many companies partake in? No. The Wii released at around the same time as the PS3, (Unless someone would like to claim about three weeks is a monumental gap,) so the fact that it fell out of the race in Japan earlier is more Nintendo's concern than Sony's. In addition, there is a fair chance that the fact that the PS3 is still a viable purchase in Japan is limiting PS4 sales, (cheaper console, bigger library than its successor, Japanese devs more eager to stay on the one with the bigger install base, etc,) whereas the Wii U has no such limitation. Of course, there's no way to know how much of an impact this would have since, again, Nintendo ditched the 7th gen early.

Sony's approach is, however, a much clumsier spin, as it is forced to bend backwards a bit more than one really should, to bring up a positive, which actually serves to make one look even more vulnerable. Personally, in their position I just would have stuck to global numbers for the Wii U and PS4, as lifetime figures make the PS4 look good, and the 2014 figures make the PS4 look VERY good compared to the Wii U. This more roundabout approach was probably taken because Sony wanted to try and reinforce the 'We're still a Japanese brand, damnit!' image, so found whatever spin angle would let them focus on Japan.

Again, though, a bit clumsy.

(To nip this in the bud, for the love of Jebas, no, the 10 million sales announcement was NOT spun. They were VERY specific, left no wiggle room, etc, etc, literally went out of their way to keep people from thinking it might have been spin. Again, spinning is NOT lying, and if Sony hadn't sold ten million, then the announcement would have been a lie, not spin.)

the marketshare data is for 2014 only.

""""This is flat-out PR Spin. During a pre-Tokyo Game Show press conference. Sony’s Asia president Atsushi Morita claimed that Sony owns 78% of the market share in Japan for ‘home consoles.’ However, Sony combined the PS4 and PS3 numbers against just the Wii U.

Sony completely ignored the Wii, and declined to give a market share update on the PS Vita, even though the PS Vita is the currently Sony’s best selling system in Japan. Nice PR spin there Sony. You guys don’t own 78% of the Japanese home market. You can’t combine a 7th and 8th generation system, then leave out the competitions’ 7th generation systems. Especially since Wii software is still selling in Japan like Super Smash Bros Brawl and Dragon Quest X.

Here are the numbers 8th gen:
Wii U -1.9 million
PS4 -670 Thousand

7th Gen:
Wii – 12.7 million
PS3 – 10 million

Portable:
3DS – 16 million
PS Vita – 3.1 million (133K for PS VitaTV

This just made a minus for me from Sony. Not cool. Apparently it's not the first time they twist things for the public, either.

Dissapointing.

You call Sony out on PR spin with reguards to marketshare, when he very clearly states 78% marketshare for 2014.Then you go on to tally up total LIFETIME sales of home consoles and handhelds to support this?

The problem there is that they're focusing on Vita and PS4 in this conference - why, in the world, would they extend the marketshare calculations to include data from anything other than 2014, when the PlayStation 4 wasn't even on sale in japan prior to 22nd feb 2014? Even if you ONLY calculate home consoles, for 2014 it all checks out.

Lets look at the facts.

According to VGchartz data, which we know from experience isn't exact, but has a 3-6% error on average.

Totals for home consoles in 2014
Sony : 979,119
Nintendo : 319,800
Microsoft : 6808
Home console total : 1,305,727

Totals breakdown:
WiiU sold in Japan during 2014 - 314,468
Wii sold in Japan during 2014 - 5332
PS4 sold in Japan during 2014 - 670,811
PS3 sold in Japan during 2014 - 308,308
360 sold in Japan during 2014 - 6808

Marketshare according to VGchartz data:
Sony : 75%
Nintendo : 24.5%
Microsoft : 0.5%

Don't get mad when it's the truth.

Yeah, they were talking about 2014, lines up with our numbers as well. It's spin but what can you do.

Either way, it's still a spin.

And? There's spin every month from every publisher. It's spin, but still fact. No need to get panties in a bunch.

You're going to have a stressful life if you get mad every time a corporate executive spins the numbers.

I mean, you do get mad every time, right? Not just in particular situations with specific brands? Because that would be lame.

OP / article jumping to conclusions about lifetime sales without ability to read the damn slide.  They won't be busted in Japan since they actually can read Japanese.

Sony's slide just says PS3 + PS4 make up 78% of the home console market from February.  Specifically on the screenshot its a bit low quality but I think it says from 4th week of February to 3rd week of August.

They haven't left out the Wii, the Wii is counted too (Wii hasn't sold much this year) and it's pretty much spot on with what VGC shows.

3DS or Vita don't figure into home console obviously.

Yeah but anything to attack Sony =P

Its funny to see people attack Sony for telling the truth about 2014's hardware sales in Japan.
