The wii had a huge marketshare but do you see cross-gen games coming out of it. No, developers stood up with it in 2010,2011 releasing yearly cod's even though the system was outdated by that time, because that is what they had. Ounce the wii u was released no cross-gen games came out for it. Therefore the 360 and ps3 were far from being long overdue. The ps2 was the only prev gen console having games still getiing released on it since it was not overdue and could do alot more, the other two consoles were though.

The PS2 was the weakest console of its generation, the reason it was supported so well and with crossgen was because of its attach rate, the same goes as to reasons Wii didn't get cross gen games. Furthermore, every single multiplat the Wii U got up until the release of Next Gen, was cross gen, considering the Wii U was 8th Gen and PS360 was 7th gen.

Furthermore, when you go to brass tacks you've got a 150 mill PS2, 20 mill GC, 25 mil Xbox its should be obvious that only the PS2 is going to get the cross gen.

versus last gen

100 mill Wii, 80 mil PS3, 80 mil 360, With attach rates best on 360,  then PS3, then Wii cross gen is a no brainer.

I keep seeing announcements for games that will be available for PS4/XB1 that will also be available for PS3/360. Very few games are next generation only. There just isn't enough of a boost in power for next generation consoles to make the games different enough. Don't get me wrong, PS4 and XB1 are a step up, but not like the differences between NES/SNES and PS1/PS2. They should have waited another year or two. They should have boosted the power of the systems a little more. There should be no trouble producing 60 FPS/1080p resolution at all.

PS3 would have ended up beating Wii--as it deserves--and people would not feel the need to buy more expensive consoles. Hey guys, I do like Nintendo, but the Wii is the worst system and idea that they ever produced, even if it did sell very well. It was not truly for core gamers and the motion fad was terrible. Wii U is actually a better system than Wii, but the casuals have moved on and it doesn't sell nearly as well. Miyamoto has finally revealed that they will focus on core gamers again. Smart choice Nintendo.

Anyway, PS3/360 gamers will not miss out on much over the next year or two, unless a moderate upgrade in graphics are really important to them.

I agree about waiting. I am one of those that are still very satisfied with last gen. Perhaps one more year would have made quite a difference.

I vehement!y disagree with your second statement. There's the 'hoopty boy' a.k.a. the Virtual Boy, but we will stick to main consoles. Personally I think the N64 was their worst hardware when measured against its peers of the day. The Playstation and Saturn easily outclassed it. The Playstation not many would argue, but when stacked against the Saturn it looses too. The problem for 64 is it didn't do ANYTHING particularly well. The Saturn blew everything out of the water for 2D. 3D was perhaps its achilles heel. However, Virtua Fighter 2 was gorgeous. Sega Rally looked great and its final offerings from Sega look good e.g., Burning Rangers, Panzer Dragoons, etc. I even thought the 3DO was more interesting if it had proper support. The only system the N64 demolished was the Atari Jaguar. However, I ALWAYS wondered what a powerful developement house could have done with the Jaguar. The Wii was underpowered yes, but even against its more powerful bretheren, Mario Galaxy looked beautuful and Metroid looked dynamite! The motion controls weren't a gimick, it was Nintendo saying, 'Ok, we are not going to get in an arms race with hardware with Sony and MS. Our core audience is different, how can we blaze our own path.' Poof, motiin controls. Often dumb, often forced, but sometimes it worked beautufully. I personally thought it was great to hear how 80 year olds gave it a shot. perhaps because of the less intimidating entry to give video games a try changed a whole lot of older people's perception of video games as a whole. There are plenty of older people who judge any kind of video gaming harshly. Perhaps Nintendo's Wii helped soften that image acrossed the board. I say, 'Well done Nintendo and once again thank you for all you have done for video games the last 30 years.

I agree wholeheartedly with you. If only it wasn't for all those publishers saying that they couldn't " innoviate" without more powerfull hardware. The release dates for the Ps4/ Xbox one should have been somewhere along the lines of fall 2015, that's the final holiday season were games are going to be mostly multiplatform with ps3 and Xbox 360.

If the consoles came out in 2015 then there would be cross gen games til 2016-2017...

Highly doubt it, of course cross gen games would have existed but not up to the rate which they exist now. Even though the last console generation was a long one, I disagree that it was long overdue. When a console is dire need of a successor, ounce that succesor is released it will quickly be forgotten ( Gamecube, Wii, OG Xbox, Wii U). The true seventh gen consoles have by far not been forgotten, atleast not at the rate of the consoles mentioned.

If the consoles were released in 2016 instead, they wouldn't be that much more powerful than they are now and we will still have cross gen games like we do now. Thats just the way the industry works. The only reason we didn't have crossgen games going from the 6th gen into the 7th gen was beacause we were talking of a jump from SD to HD gaming. Now even if the consoles came out two years later, we would still have been looking at HD to beter Hd gaming.

And all those "succesors" you mentioned; thats a bad analysis. Those consoles were in need of a successor cause they were failures (with exception to the wii but thats a different matter). Look at how the PS1, PS2 sold... look at how the PS3 is still sellng even though the PS4 is breaking the sales record of every playstation platform before it.

I think it was the perfect time. I would've been OK with one more year maybe, but no more.

My problem is I have a 75" screen (HD projector) and 720p looks awful compared to 1080p. So even if the games just get a resolution boost, it makes a huge difference.

I was ready for new systems, old ones been around longer than expected. Surprised games coming out next year on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 still.

There would still be cross-gen games even if they released in 2015. The reason games are cross-gen is because the next-gen consoles don't have a large enough userbase yet. That wouldn't change no matter when they released.

I think the Wii Us launch sales forced Sonys hand and they rushed the console announcement out. Then of course the Wii U sales fell off a cliff but by the point Sony was in an Microsoft had to follow suit.
IMO both consoles were originally planned for this year release, both feel very rushed and there was software still coming out on last gen consoles.

GPU manufacturers are still at 28nm and 20nm is nowhere in sight. Even if PS4 would have released next year would not be any different hardware wise. Because there would be no improvement between 2013 and 2015.

Waiting would have just prolonged the transition. Making games cross gen is a business decision. Many companies have been surprised at how fast gamers have moved over to current gen.

No, it couldn't.

It was already too long in the making, people were losing their interest in gaming.
