I think the Wii Us launch sales forced Sonys hand and they rushed the console announcement out. Then of course the Wii U sales fell off a cliff but by the point Sony was in an Microsoft had to follow suit.
IMO both consoles were originally planned for this year release, both feel very rushed and there was software still coming out on last gen consoles.
