Forums - Nintendo - Miyamoto explains the shift away from casuals.

Wow, this is big news. Finally a crystal-clear admission that the Wii U was never intended to be a follow-up to the Wii. I mean, anyone who was able to put the pieces together already knew that, but for a lot of people this will come as a surprise.

It's also interesting how much contempt Miyamoto has for the Wii owner who didn't "upgrade" to his beloved 3D Mario and the like. Then he continues by displaying immense denial when he says that Nintendo doesn't need to make games that are different from the ones they made in the eighth generation. Nintendo's financials suggest otherwise.

Wii U is the Wii successor. Nintendo simply can't compete with Apple and customers who don't care for any kind of real gaming.

Making any type of successor to the flagging Wii brand (which was honestly out of gas by late 2010) was their no.1 mistake.

Should have just made a traditional, straight forward Nintendo console, not another Wii Party/Wii Fit/Nintendo Land in-between machine with poor specs.

Casuals had their 15 minutes of fun with Wii Sports and don't give a sh*t about Nintendo now that they have their games on smart devices.

Its good to see Miyamoto and to a certain extend, Nintendo, say in the nicest way possible that the Wii was indeed fad and that the mobile world has had an impact on their ability to concentrate on the everyday user. Now I have something to link when the Nintendo elite say otherwise.

"Their attitude is, 'okay, I am the customer. You are supposed to entertain me.' It's kind of a passive attitude they're taking, and to me it's kind of a pathetic thing. They do not know how interesting it is if you move one step further and try to challenge yourself [with more advanced games]."

...

that has got to be a translation error.  he couldn't have really said that could he?!?

Miyamoto for president.

Project Giant Robot and friends still sucks ass, though.

I think Project Giant Robot is just to follow through with the Wii U.

Wii U is the gamecube's spiritual successor.

I'm sure the translators had a little fun with it.

I really hope Nintendo continues to go through with this approach.

Nintendo is in a rut. Hardcore gamers have abandoned them, now casual gamers as well.

Nintendo needs to re-invent themselves. They are my favorite video game company but the Wii U pretty much appeals to nobody.

Calling your previous audience pathetic? I hope this was mistranslated because that is a crappy attitude.

I'm worried about the next Nintendo console now if Iwata and others feel th same.

Without cutting edge specs, Resident Evil exclusivity, Metroid Prime, Eternal Darkness, Wave Race, etc. sure.

I don't remember Wii Party U, Wii Fit U, Nintendo Land, Wii Sports Club, NSMBU, Mario & Sonic Olympics on the GameCube.

Nintendo thought they could get those casuals to play slightly deeper games on Wii U ... they were dead wrong. They weren't coming back at all.

Wii U is a colossal mistake, a bet that this audience would at least show up in some way when they've ditched Nintendo full stop.

I used this example before but it's soooo apt ... the casual audience is the really cute, but entirely vapid "hot girl" at the night club. Nintendo being the guy who usually never gets the girl like that, but being upset with a lack of success with the "regular girls", Nintendo decided to do something outside of themselves and just started dancing like a wild man.

"Hot girl" notices Nintendo and starts dancing with him, even making out with him. Crazy. Nintendo can't believe they landed a girl like this. Nintendo's in love. Even Nintendo's rivals, Sony and Microsoft are surprised and a bit jealous.

But it turns out, that one fun night at the bar was all "hot girl" wanted. The next week Nintendo goes back, but is heartbroken to see she's with some other guy. That's basically Nintendo's casual-story ... they wanted a girlfriend/long term relationship, "casual girl" is just at the club to party, she doesn't want a boyfriend and if she did it would be Apple-guy, not Nintendo, Nintendo was just a funny guy she met at the bar one night and forget about the next week.

Wii U is the "next week".
