Definitely won't happen. The gamepad is core to the Wii U and i think it makes a great part of it.

Prediction: Switch will sell better than Wii U Lifetime Sales by Jan 1st 2018

The Wii U GamePad (the tablet) is awesome and comfortable - I prefer lying on the couch with it over playing on the TV with the Wii U Pro Controller. But Nintendo has been adding more and more support for non-tablet controllers, e.g. you can now browse the eShop without it. It could be possible for them to make it optional and it could shave off some of the cost.

Can you imagine a $200 tabletless Mario Kart / Smash Bros bundle for the holidays? That would sell like crazy.

Nintendo would probably do that and then not advertise it at all.

No, because just like the Wii had motion controls, the Wii-U has a tablet. It's what Nintendo does to stay fresh. If they just launched the same console with better graphics over and over again, people would likely tire of it.

Here is what Iwata told Nintendo investors in Jan. 30, 2014:

"Unfortunately, as the current situation of Wii U shows, we have not been able to fully communicate the value of the GamePad."

"Therefore, we intend to take on this challenge, and I would like to have this solved before the year-end sales season."

"In order to do this, it is obvious that Our top priority task this year is to offer software titles that are made possible because of the GamePad."

"We have managed to offer several of such software titles for occasions when many people gather in one place to play, but we have not been able to offer a decisive software title that enriches the user’s gameplay experience when playing alone with the GamePad. This will be one of the top priorities of Mr. Miyamoto’s software development department this year."

...and this is what Miyamoto came up with...

Nope. Seems like they've double down on the game pad for the next year.

Wii U is going to be the lowest selling Nintendo console ever, that's pretty much all there is to it.

I think they can't drop the GamePad either because they have a lot of them manufactured and don't want to eat a loss on those unsold controllers if they switched to a tablet-less SKU.

Agreed with above though Miyamoto's "tablet demos" were a depressing display of a company desperate to try and shoe-horn ideas into a controller that simply doesn't have many uses for console gaming.

Wii U gamepad is pretty much the definition of an answer looking for a problem. Nintendo bought into the hype that you can sell hardware based on controller gimmicks and their luck ran out.
