Forums - Microsoft - How capable is Xbox One as a windows device?

Well, I am no techie in any way, shape or form. But we have heard alot about the potential for Windows 8 apps on Xbox one. This got me thinking, how capable would XBox One be to run Windows 8, the RT version? Imagine downloading an app that turns the X1 into a Windows RT device, enabling you to connect a mouse and keyboard, downloading apps and playing them. Would that even be possible or does the base OS of X1 demand to much?

If it would be possible, the X1 would suddenly turn into to single greatest piece of tech in my home, ever. Imagine swithing between Titanfall and my Excel sheets :P.

Well... RT is mostly for Arm architecture... X1 is X86 so in theory, you should be able to run just normal Windows 8 on it

PC Specs: CPU: 7800X3D || GPU: Strix 4090 || RAM: 32GB DDR5 6000 || Main SSD: WD 2TB SN850

Sounds like an awesome idea. The X1 could replace a PC for some people.

I was thinking that too, but I guess the X1 OS takes up alot of processing power, and maybe having a regular W8 OS on it would be abit to demanding. But what do I know really :P.

And I could have all my emulators on it, playing Phantasy Star 4 with my X1 controller all night long :).

M$ has been pimping that Windows will be a One System architecture across all devices. They are absent in including the XB1 in any of these adverts though.

You would think that they could do it if they really wanted...

It is near the end of the end....

Nahh its more than capable of Running it. You can Run normal Windows 8 on many PCs that are far worse than x1

cross platform apps will happen.

I was more thinking in terms of the full-blown OS installed on my X1 :).

They could probably do a bootcamp like thing the way macs run other OS, snapping from X1 OS to PC OS might not work though.

Thanks jlmurph!

just saying,..  a tv and couch set up would be horrible for working with excel sheets.  there is a reason people buy multiple devices that do very similar things.  phones and tablets and laptops and consoles all have strenghts and weaknesses.   consoles are great for entertainment but productivity things would just be a waste of time and effort on MS's part.

..but if they really wanted to waste a billion (or whatever) dollars i'm sure they could do it.
