Forums - Microsoft - How capable is Xbox One as a windows device?

kitler53 said:

just saying,..  a tv and couch set up would be horrible for working with excel sheets.  there is a reason people buy multiple devices that do very similar things.  phones and tablets and laptops and consoles all have strenghts and weaknesses.   consoles are great for entertainment but productivity things would just be a waste of time and effort on MS's part.

..but if they really wanted to waste a billion (or whatever) dollars i'm sure they could do it.

Well, the Titanfall/Excel thing was a joke you know :). I do, however, have my Surface RT connected to my TV and use it as my regular computer at home. Excel is a bit tricky, but the other Office programs look just fine.

I can "almost" use Google Docs on my Wii U. It supports USB keyboard and I can change settings to get desktop version of Docs instead of the default mobile version. But it is to weak to handle spreadsheets and stuff.

im pretty sure they could patch it in in a month. they just have to shut down some restrictions on the xbone and add some drivers. its not costly and it wouldnt take long, but it would destroy the xbone. windows 8 means steam, means dirt cheap games...
and it would be a home for pirates(thats not bad easy pirated systems won most of the time)

If this ever happened, sales of X1 would probably increase greatly.

It's x86 with a lot of equivalent PC components. Of course, it's not plug-and-play, but installing a full version of Windows wouldn't be impossible, or even hard really, for Microsoft.

I realize there would be some major issues with this, and suddenly everyone would be able to use steam, emulators and such, risking that MS sells less of their own games. But I have a feeling the machine would grow in popularity :).

you should bring it to xbox-uservoice

Microsoft has already shared with developers the architecture and tools for apps to run on Xbox One. They just havent unveiled the Store story. http://www.polygon.com/2014/4/2/5574750/microsofts-universal-windows-app-xbox-one-any-platform

Its libraries that sell systems not a single game.
