I wonder how this thread looked like if Sony secured that deal...

Once again. I'm not saying it was a bad choice by Microsoft. I'm saying it was a bad choice by SE. I think they made a good decision. But it's still a different situation. PS4 has sold double the numbers of the xbox one. And sony's consoles were the best selling for the first tomb raider. It would be like if bioshock 2 had gone exclusive to sony after bioshock 1 sold better on the 360. It's a little baffling.

I wonder why SE/Microsoft is not listening to all those Internet Pro Business Guys Haters/Ragers out there who seems to know way better than SE/Microsoft people about the impact of a business deal... Those IPBGHR people also seem to have all the inside information required about the actual deal to make a clear and very educated decision... Come on SE/Microsoft, what are you waiting for, listen to those guys!

People seem to think that it is just free for a game to release on additional consoles. It is far from it, with additional programming costs, server costs, advertising costs. Additionally, people would be astonished what Microsoft and Sony are willing to pay for exclusive rights to a game. For example, Microsoft paid $75 million just to get GTA IV onto their console. A game that still only has 11 million lifetime sales (on Xbox). That is almost $7 for every single copy sold. I realize that GTA is a higher profile game, but it goes to show that sometimes the amount paid for deals like this can actually be a pretty good chunk of money when you look at it as a dollar amount per game sold.

This is true, but if the production values are worth having, the cost of porting will not porportionately be that expensive. This is why exclusives are becoming rarer and rarer.

Considering S-E's own investor documentation says Crystal Dynamics only has about $40 million of common stock, if Microsoft were really throwing that kind of money around it would make more sense for them just to buy the studio. You're talking a substantial amount of what the studio is worth to buy an exclusive.

Compare to Rockstar, which has more than three times as many employees and is clearly worth a lot more.

For one, that would be the par value of common stock that Crystal Dynamics has issued, and is in no way whatsoever indicative of what Crystal Dynamics would cost for Microsoft to outright buy it. For instance, Apple's common stock is worth $575 billion, but their common stock outstanding (per their financial statements) is only $20 billion. So for Microsoft to throw $10 million for exclusivity of a game from a company that is worth more along the lines of several hundred million dollars instead of buying the company outright? Yea, it seems incredibly possible to me.

Either it's timed or that decision was made early on...because I can't believe they would want it to be exclusive to the Xbox One now that we know the PS4 has already reached 10 million sold.

I don´t think they are stupids or any thing else but make money.

SE financial is not in great shape. They need money now, or they may be risking future projects in any platform.

The PS4 lead is not overwelming. And in fact it dosen´t matter when both consoles are so similar and more important, similar to a standard PC.

Developers and publishers have much more lavarege this time than last gen over the console manufactures.

It dosen´t even matter if the PS4 reach 200mi vs 20mi XOnes. There are still 4bi PCs, 2Bi smartphones and 1Bi tablets.

I still think its timed. If it is timed, then its a pretty good deal for SE. Plus, maybe SE needs some cash now, and so this MS deal will give them money they need right now.

Well that simply isn't true. It is at about double the sales. Not saying this is a bad decision for Square Enix (it really depends how much they are being paid for it), but the reality is that a release on the PS4 would probably more than double (if not triple) the total sales for the game.

exclusive to Xbox........

We reap what we sow

They had to release the "definitive" edition of the last game just to make a profit and now they've incorporated brand new technology in making this game just to make it exclusive to the least selling console? LOL
SE is going to squirm after this one.

Shipment was about 10mi vs 6mi last quarter.

It´s wierd VGChartz undertraking only one of the consoles.

Not that I'm here to bicker about sales, but PS4 was just confirmed as having 10 million sold through to consumers. Xbox One on the other hand is at approximately 6 million shipped to stores (indicating it is somewhere in the 5.X million sold through to consumers). So as I said before, PS4 is at about double the sales.
