Yup, you should definitely play Tropical Freeze if you want a challenging (and absolutely magnificent) platformer. 
Aside from some already mentioned, also Giana Sisters
3D World is hard when collecting all the 3 stars and stamps. The limited time doesn't help too and the depth perception in this game has the longest learning curve for Mario. Thank goodness for camera controls.

Is Knack even a platformer? Were there platforms and gaps between these platforms Knack could fall in?
Super Meat Boy is a difficult platformer that also happens to be one of the greatest games ever made. Also, N+ is worth checking out as well.
Go on youtube and search for "rage quit"

DKC: Tropical Freeze honestly was too hard for my liking, it interfered with my enjoyment of the game.
