I like this rumor, and I think it is highly likely. As pointed out in the article, the difference in cost between a 2.5" 500GB and 1TB HDD is not much; for a massive OEM buyer like Sony, I would guess around ~$10 per drive. Sony has already said that, even on day one, they were breaking even or making a small profit on each PS4 sold (a huge turnaround from the $300+ loss per console with PS3). We can safely assume that at this point, with manufacturing costs always going down & millions of 28-nm AMD APUs coming out of TSMC for both Sony and Microsoft, that Sony is probably making a much bigger profit per system now.
What I see making the most business sense is for them to launch the "new" 1TB SKU for $399 and retire the 500GB SKU. Sony knows how important that $399 number was to their initial (and continuing) success, and I think they would realize it's better to add more value to that number that either a) drop the 500GB SKU in price (even $50 would elminate all the profit I bet) and do a 1TB SKU at $399, or b) launch the 1TB SKU at higher than the 500GB model and become greedy. I think a November lunch, just in time for Black Friday, would be perfect. No reason to increase the value in Sep./Oct. as Destiny will sell plenty of PS4s all by itself. But when people start shopping for Christmas, a 1TB PS4 at $399 sitting next to a 500GB Xbox One at $399 just makes it that much easier to pick Sony.
