No way a fighting game is going to get GOTY, I also don't think it's going to be Bayonetta 2, I just don't think it looks like its GOTY material but it does look good. It will probably be Destiny with a majority and then AC Unity with a few.

Why cant a fighter get GOTY?

It just won't happen, fighting games aren't on the level of story-quality or emotional quality or have those ONE of a kind moments in which you will remember for a long time, their just fighting games, they aren't doing anything different, fighting games are fighting games. The formula doesn't change for them, look at U2, Journey, The Last of Us, Portal 2, they are very different from their specific genres. And if it does get GOTY, the people who game it probably haven't played the rest of the games that's why I like Gamespot and IGNs method of choosing GOTY, all the votees play the GOTY contenders.

Wolfenstein New Order is probably one of the best games this year if you like single player games. It wasn't an innovation, but it was probably one of the most complete and well put together shooters in years.

Coming Soon though:

Borderlands The Pre-Sequel, Forza Horizon 2, Drive Club, Sunset Overdrive, Far Cry 4, CoD Advanced Warfare, and Dragon Age Inquisition all have chances....

With Dragon Age Inquisition and Far Cry 4 probably being the front runners to take on Destiny. I know a lot of people are on the band wagon for Destiny right now, but, I am more interested in an RPG like Dragon's Age and a shooter like Far Cry 4 or another Borderlands. And compared to the beta I would much rather see Wolfenstein New Order win than Destiny.

But, that is not going to happen, too many people are on the Destiny bandwagon...

Lot of praise being given to Shovel Knight. Another indie darling that came from a promising kickstarter. I could see that game winning a couple GOTY awards. I see a lot of people praising Wolfenstein:TNO and Donkey Kong TP so those could also win some as well. Bayonetta 2 and Smash 4 will definitely have its praise when they come out. Destiny seems good and Bungie has an amazing record behind them and even with all of the non-hype before the alpha, I know that this game will still prove to be good.

Though who knows, everything might turn out to be crap and Hyrule Warriors becomes everyone's GOTY. Heck it will be GOTG if it has playable Groose in it and he says the line, "THE GROOSE IN ON THE LOOSE!"

To the people saying Smash and Bayo 2, not everyone has a Wii U.

Not everyone had a PS3, didn't stop TLOU from curb stomping the competition last year.

Then why are people saying Destiny is going to get GOTY? It doesn't seem to have much to offer in the story department. Its just a FPS game in the same way Smash is just a fighting game (except Smash is much more fringe than Destiny is). Saying story and emotion are the deciding factor on GOTY seems a little...strange

A lot of people would also say the Last of Us is  overated too.

Of course. Anything that gets popular automatically gets hater too. It's the natural order of things. Good thing those people never manage to achieve anything.

Just like GTA 5 right? Which is way more popular than TLoU yet people don't ceaselessly defend it like people do with TLoU. Why is that I wonder? Probably because GTA 5 fans don't need hype up their game. They run around calling it the " greatest game of all time" and other nonsense like that. A lot of people call haters just see TLoU for what it is, a great game with some flaws and not the perfect masterpiece its obviously not.

Maybe because the people attacking GTA V are not doing so because of the console it's on but actually because of the game itself? TLOU is the greatest game of all time just like Nintendo fans like to Call Ocarina of Time the greatest game of all time. I don't see anyone getting angry because of the latter so why does the first one bother you so much?

Its not the fact people call the TLOU greatest game of all time that bothers me. Its when anyone calls any game the "greatest of all time" that it bothers me. This is because no one game can be the "best of all time" or " the greatest of time". Genres are different as are generations and its near impossible to ever defintively say any game stands above the others in every respect. People are free to call whatever game they feel is the best of all time, they just shouldn't hate on others for thinking that another game(like GTA 5) is the best of all time.

Really? You're going to say it's story is bad just from the beta? I also think Destiny offers a very different experience from your typical FPS, most FPS don't have this many RPG elements, hell I've played tons of FPS and I've never seen one with any RPG elements. Also can you really say Destiny is similar to any game? I don't see any game offering you the ability to explore the moon, venus, etc. I wasn't planning on buying Destiny on launch but once I saw the RPG elements, loot and customization of the items I pre-ordered. You could say it's very much like Borderlands but just adding something generic like a skill tree doesn't make a RPG.

All I'm saying is there is no way in hell a fighting game will get GOTY, never going to happen.  I'm also not saying that Destiny will win GOTY but it has a good chance, there aren't any big games this year. Dragon Age, I'm sure people won't like it for the hand carrying.

Unity, Smash, Omega/Alpha...Maybe not so much that last one. Idk. I feel Destiny is going to be pretty underwhelming like Titanfall and Watch Dogs.
