I don't think it's a physical tracking device embedded in the thing, it's just a tracking methodology that allows them to keep track of discrete merchandise.

It would calculate where it left the supply chain: was it lifted out of the Fedex truck when the delivery guy had his back turned? Was it taken out of the backroom of a Gamestop before it ever hit the floor?

Unless the next handheld had THAT level of security - this barely changes anything I believe.
