Forums - Gaming - Gamestop to overhaul trade-ins, average base value to increase 20%

GameStop is overhauling trade-ins and launching a new program that will wind up giving people more money for the games they sell, Kotaku has learned.

The new initiative, which will launch on August 18, will simplify GameStop's trade-in structure, reducing the complexity of what has become an unnecessarily obtuse service. No longer will you have to put credit toward pre-orders or promotions in order to get the most bang for your buck; instead, any games you sell to GameStop will come in at a flat rate, only varying if you want cash instead of credit, or if you're a member of their subscription program.

As a result of this change, GameStop will now offer more money for games you sell them. Starting August 18, the retailer will bump up the "average base value" of games they buy by 20%, according to documentation I've obtained.

So that copy of NBA 2k8 I traded in on Saturday might now be worth $0.30 instead of the $0.25 I got for it.

Companies like gamestop are ripping customers and game makers. It is because of gamestop we have to face DRM type issues. I hope gamestop goes out of business.

So, it's not people stealing? But a company legitimately selling games and buying games to sell again to customers?

Who knew.

Hmm, pie.

i cant remember the last time i traded in a game. i do buy used games a lot though.

Gamestop and other stores that do the used game thing are the main culprits in driving console DRM.  If the devs were getting their cut of every single console sale then there wouldn't be things like online passes.

Nice try, it's just thieves, Xbox had a lot of issues with illegal copies of games being downloaded. Some idiots who downloaded Halo 3 from pirate bay and other places tried to sign into the MP before it had gone live so MS knew they were illegal copies for example. Things like this are the reason for Online Passes, any other excuse is just bullcrap to make them sound legitimate when they were just a con.

The developers have already got their 'cut' when the first copy of the game was sold. A customer who has traded in their game at such places like GameStop has also waved his rights to any of the content contained on the disc to whoever buys it next which includes use of servers. The new customer spending less on the game because they bought it used not full price new (compare Titanfall in any high street shop used compared to say Xbox Live Store prices) may be more willing, if they enjoy it, to buy DLC because they can more easily afford it.

this was good, is that the girl from the add?  jogos de moto

Surely online passes don't bother you anyways. After all, it is only used game sales that affect them, and I'm assuming you only buy new since Gamestop is so terrible.

Money can't buy happiness. Just video games, which make me happy.

So you are going to use one game as your example of rampant console piracy?   Sounds solid, stick with that.

If stores like Gamestop didn't sell used games, it would mean more people buying new games (unless you want to argue that people simply wouldn't purchase if the 5 dollar less used option didn't exist?) and would mean more money in the devs pocket.  That is why the online pass exists; to get that 10-15 bucks that they are misisng out on by having the used game sold instead of the new one.  Your DLC point may be good, but I would say that anyone who enjoyed the game enough will buy the DLC, used purchase or new.

I never actually gave an opinion on Gamestop, merely an observation/opinion on the console DRM.  I buy mostly new games though, as I typically buy games I want to play day one.
