| The Fury said: Nice try, it's just thieves, Xbox had a lot of issues with illegal copies of games being downloaded. Some idiots who downloaded Halo 3 from pirate bay and other places tried to sign into the MP before it had gone live so MS knew they were illegal copies for example. Things like this are the reason for Online Passes, any other excuse is just bullcrap to make them sound legitimate when they were just a con. The developers have already got their 'cut' when the first copy of the game was sold. A customer who has traded in their game at such places like GameStop has also waved his rights to any of the content contained on the disc to whoever buys it next which includes use of servers. The new customer spending less on the game because they bought it used not full price new (compare Titanfall in any high street shop used compared to say Xbox Live Store prices) may be more willing, if they enjoy it, to buy DLC because they can more easily afford it. |
So you are going to use one game as your example of rampant console piracy? Sounds solid, stick with that.
If stores like Gamestop didn't sell used games, it would mean more people buying new games (unless you want to argue that people simply wouldn't purchase if the 5 dollar less used option didn't exist?) and would mean more money in the devs pocket. That is why the online pass exists; to get that 10-15 bucks that they are misisng out on by having the used game sold instead of the new one. Your DLC point may be good, but I would say that anyone who enjoyed the game enough will buy the DLC, used purchase or new.
