Forums - Gaming - Top Two Metacritic Games In 2014 Will Be 2013 Titles

"As of now, the recently released The Last Of Us: Remastered holds an average 95 Metascore.

Grand Theft Auto V, which launched last year to widespread critical acclaim, has an average 97 Metascore for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, and a 94 for PC.

Currently, there are only a few scant titles in 2014 that break the 90 barrier (Dark Souls IIand Rayman Legends, for instance), and none have come close to the mid-to-high 90s. Now, when GTAV launches for next-gen platforms later this year, it’s almost a guarantee that it will once again drag down super high scores. The result?

It seems inevitable that the two highest-scoring games of 2014, according to either Metacritic or GameRankings, will be The Last Of Us: Remastered and Grand Theft Auto V…which are, of course, 2013 games spruced up for a new year. In the eyes of many, neither should be eligible for any awards in 2014, as they simply don’t qualify as games originally released in this calendar year. We would agree with that."

However, there is an outside shot that one of this fall’s highly anticipated titles will make a run at a mid-90s Metascore. We said in a recent article that Bungie’s Destiny has the best chance of earning multiple perfect scores, for example, and games like Assassin’s Creed: Unity and LittleBigPlanet 3 might end up scoring crazy high. There’s no predicting the future, obviously.

But wait, what about that Halo: The Master Chief Collection, which might also score huge with the critics? This feasibly means that the top three highest-rated games of 2014 won’t even be original 2014 releases. What does this say about the current state of the industry? Well, not much; new generations always take a while to get rolling, and everyone always loves revisiting classics (and instant classics).

i dont think Destiny can save 2014, but i think it will do 90+ on metacritic..

They will be the highest rated games for years to come. Well deserved of course.

And it's 3 with the MCC. Ports are great.

If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.

if i could play ps3 games on ps4 i would already have bought one, but they instead prefer to block that option and release a remaster.. :(

anyway i dont think this time around would be that easy to have backward compability, since ps3 had a special arquitecture:P

Kind of funny and sad at the same time.

its mentioned in the article, if MCC is well received we could have a top 3 with non 2014  games xD

I think Smash and Bayonetta 2 have their chances as well, not to be the highest rated games of 2014, but to make a 90+ score; aside of... all those games coming in October.

My bet with The_Liquid_Laser: I think the Switch won't surpass the PS2 as the best selling system of all time. If it does, I'll play a game of a list that The_Liquid_Laser will provide, I will have to play it for 50 hours or complete it, whatever comes first.

Regarding how this relects on the current state of gaming you  answer to your self was spot on.

Research shows Video games  help make you smarter, so why am I an idiot

Hopefully Dragon age Inquisition can pull a good metascore, there might be a few surprises in october as well which could pull high meta's. Even if that doesn't happen, I prefer seeing TLOU as the highest rated game of the year over dark souls 2 which I view as highly overrated and riding a wave of hype around its supposed "difficulty" and the other souls games.

Yeah that is very disappointing. AC Unity and LB3 won't score that high so these games will be the highest rated for a while, until Uncharted 4 comes out.

I don't think either of those games deserves those scores. Critics need to be much more harsh on ports.
