I wouldn't go as far as saying extremely, but it's doing good.

As I mentioned, the PS2 and PSP were stil profiting while the PS3 was causing massive losses. So its difficult to measure exactly how much of a financial disaster the PS3 was. Fact is the X1 doing well. I'm reluctant to say its doing "extremely well" like the OP implies. But its also not the irrelevant platform you seem to believe. Here's a question, in your opinion how many units does X1 have to sell just to be a relevant platform? I'll assume more than Vita and OG Xbox. |
Uhuh its doing well.
84k to 12k last chart week in Europe, 72k to 36k in its home market. So that is well in your mind ?? ok there bud.
I think we can put this thread to bed now that the Aug 2 numbers are out:
1. Xbox is being outsold by the PS4 2:1 in North America
2. Xbox is being outsold by WiiU globally
3. Xbox is being outsold by PS4 3:1 globally
4. Xbox One is tracking at the same weekly numbers (consistently) that it did before the cheaper SKU was released.
It's NOT "doing well", it's failing...by whatever metric you use to measure it by.

The north America stat is especially worrisome if you're Microsoft. Even on their worst day, I dont think Microsoft themselves would even begin to think they would lose north America.
Do you think that after the failure of Xbox One against the PS4, Microsoft will stop the consoles? I really hope not ......

This year, no, probably not. But if they have poor sales over Xmas, and they don't have any momentum going into next year? I wouldn't be surprised if they did. There is increasing pressure from shareholders to focus on the "core" business and eliminate the unprofitable Xbox division. Even with the billions of dollars MS has in the bank, NO company is going to chase a losing business model year after year when the results are this poor. While the 360 was never profitable (overall, not just in specific quarters)...MS was willing to lose money while they built market share. Now that they are LOSING market share AND still losing money, there is not much reason, except for pride, for them to stay in the category. They have bigger fish to fry anyway...they still need to figure out how to increase adoption of Windows 8, Windows Phone and Surface. THOSE are the markets they can't afford to lose...the "battle for the living room" is not only over, but to MS it's totally irrelevant to their overall strategy!

The question of whether a company stops making consoles isn't a result of a direct comparison to competition, it is a matter of profits. If being in the console business turns an acceptable profit, they will stay. If it does not, they will get out. I don't think getting out means they dump the xbox brand and it is never to be seen again. I think, if anything, they will sell the xbox brand to someone else looking to get into the game.

I think that's a little premature. Its not doing THAT badly. Theres no way they are winning this generation and that's a fact, but if they make money and keep a core audience, then they will be fine. Im not underestimating Halo to move consoles as well.

This is true.
Actually, the first Microsoft's hardware product on the chopping block is Surface. It is doing very poorly, and losing huge amounts. With Nadella shying away from hardware, Surface will be the first domino to fall.
But if it does get discontinued as early as 2015, XBox is on a very shaky ground...

I have a feeling you don't read. You didn't respond to anything I said.
The X1 can still move many millions of units over time. The PSP sold significantly less than the DS, yet PSP still did very well.
If the Vita did half as well as the PSP, the Vita would be doing well. Get the idea?
