There is a console called the Mega Duck. I just want to put that out there.

Some handheld standouts:
Game Boy Advance - best name
Atari Lynx
Sega Game Gear
Neo Geo Pocket
And of course Wonderswan!

PS is always the best nane.PS4 keeps that tradition.Dreamcast was a good name, but not for a console.

Xbox Azure surely. MS pretty much has to drop the numbering thing now. Can't go Xbox TWO as that makes no sense, and what other number would make sense? Xbox One thousand?

What the name 'Wii' stood for is pretty simple actually. At least, this is what I got out of Nintendo's explanations:
It emphasizes the local multiplayer aspect the system aims for and the fact that it's supposed to be for people of all ages, by calling it 'We'. The two 'i's represent two individual people standing side-by-side as they would do in real life when they're standing around playing together with the motion controllers.
When you think about it, that was actually a pretty clever name.
'WiiU' by extension emphasizes the fact that it's also about a third person, with the GamePad, that's controlling the game in another way. It's about the asymmetric gameplay and the fact the person with the GamePad ('you') can continue playing when others stop using the GamePad. They also said they would focus more on the individual gamer with the 'U' more rather than families only, for what good came from it until now...
I agree that the WiiU name sounds silly and doesn't roll off the tongue easily though, and that it's explanation is shaky when we all know it was solely about trying to ride a successful name for a second time.
The Xbox One's name, as I understood it, is simply saying that it's the 'only' box you're going to need in your living room. That it's all-encompassing. Pretty weak as well I agree because it's obviously not going to be the only box we'll ever need. It's also weird chronologically.
So yeah, I agree naming this gen's been poor with Microsoft's and Nintendo's consoles
.
Xbox One is naff but not for reasons of confusion, I don't know anybody that has confused it with the original, that thing died over 10 years ago.
Come up with better names, bro! Just kidding, there's no better console name than the Dreamcast.

I guess it means that the console is about YOU? Xbox One: Probably one the worst choice of words for a console, did they genuinely want to confuse people and make them think this the first Xbox? PS4: Nothing new here, just the fourth playstation, go on with your day. Which gen had the best names in your opinion? I think it was 5th Nintendo 64: It was in your face like "We are 64 bit and the others are 32 bit, GET N OR GET OUT!" Playstation: They said it was a station for playing and that is exactly what it was Sega Saturn: Coooool, it's named after a PLANET. Don't really know what the console had to do with planets, but hey it sounds cool right? |
saturn's ring = disc

It's disappointing how the Mega Duck has nothing to do with ducks.. I mean, what was even the point of naming it the Mega Duck?
