If Wii U had the userbase of the 3DS, which isn't anything to necessarily write home about, but should be well clear of 50 million sold through by next summer ... that would make all the difference in the world to a new I.P. like this.

Instead it's stuck on the Wii U userbase.

This game may be a textbook example of why Nintendo needs one unified platform that allows the same games to be played in handheld or home play setups.

Just adding one more reasoning why I think it will sell. It's Nintendo's take on a game genre that every other gamer nowadays likes, so it will attend to everyone's taste (those who own a WiiU that is). Since E3 this game is on everyone's radar and lots of non-Nintendo loyals are curios about this game. Pikmin 3 or Donkey Kong TG, for instance, don't cater to other gamers aside from Nintendo fans as much as Splatoon does.

Believe me, it will sell.

Are you sure about that? I don't see much interest for the game outside of Nintendo gamers. As for DK:TF and Pikmin, well.. the same thing can be said can be said about this game. In fact, I don't know why DK:TF sold as much as it did on Wii U. As it is a well establised IP that sold well over 6 million copies (DK: Returns) last gen it sure did drop off a lot.

To OP, I'm thinking about 450K.

Seconded. Nintendo fans seem to be very interested in it, but I haven't seen very much if any attention to it from outside. Other high selling new ips have had bucketloads of that, look at the amount of hype other games like Titanfall, Watch Dogs and now Destiny have had. Splatoon's hype is no where near those levels.

Thirded. It's human nature to assume that a lot of people are interested in the same things as you, but often that doesn't match reality. I believe this is the case when Nintendo fans claim this has a lot of hype. It might sell around 1,5 million if they are lucky.

Whatevered. It's a mystery why this is supposed to be a big new IP. I can comprehend why people were hyped for Titanfall, not that it brought sth. overly special, but it was appealing to some extend with its acrobatics and mechs. Splatoon is... colorful. So is Garden Warfare. But as far as i remember nobody cared about that one. Now some generic fun shooter is Nintendos big secret weapon, because...? An innovative take on arena shooter? That is all? Looking at the gameplay i can surely say its gonna be stale after a short while. Not much to offer in any direction (graphical, level, game mode-wise).

Hunting Season is done...

Depends on a lot of things. Amount of content by release, the quality of the game overall obviously, and especially the marketing.

I feel like Nintendo wants this to be a major franchise, so I think they'll make a big deal out of the game when it comes out. From what I remember, a lot of non-Nintendo fans took interest in the game when it was shown off at E3 too, which is probably what they were hoping to do.

I personally hope/expect 2m+

I think this game has more potential for moving Wii Us than MK8 or SSB4 in the west. I'm expecting it to leg it's way to 3 million plus. A shooter with Nintendo's arcade sensibilities should not be underestimated. I also expect it to be popular with the ladies.

I think if Nintendo really want this to be successful they should pair it with a Saturday morning cartoon. A TV show could hit the right notes in creating appeal amongst the >13 demographic that is key to Nintendo's success with this game.
