Forums - Sony - Selektive Memory: The Sony PlayStation 4

In 2013, most of the PR varied from lukewarm to generally positive.

Most of it was due to many of the improvements made on the PS4 from the mistakes made by the PS3.

After the reveal of the nearest competitors console, Postive PR began to take off and after E3 Postive PR skyrockted as PlayStation not only offered a cheaper price point to its closest competitor but also announced no DRM for the console, gaining so much traction that it nearly complete changed its closest competitor.

The pros:

Most powerful system (console)

Cheaper then its nearest competitor by $100

The power difference between the PS4 and its cheaper competitor was overcome by power difference.

More common architecture resulted in adequate 3rd Party support.

Inviting attitude to indies, garned a lot of development support, even if small developers, the games add up.

Controller redesign was generally more well recieved then its predecessors.

The cons:

Lack of supply harmed sales significantly until March

Lack of BC reduced the upgrade potential slightly, if the PS4 was BC PS3 would only be sold by entry price.

Lack of features compared to its predecessor, granted the PS3 had a fraction of the features it now does at launch, but the PS4 almost exclusively games focus made it seem barebones compared to its competitors, in the same way that a racecar is stripped of excess weight but has little utility out of gaming.

The PS4 is currently leading globally and in the US, and its sales are tracking only slightly behind the Wii. Its performance this Holiday is expected to be good, but if the console faces the supply problems it had earlier again, and takes too long to implement simple features like DLNA and promised features like MP3 support and Standby mode, then it might be harmed considerably.

"Selektive" eh? Hmmmm.

$100 more than it's closest competitor: Wii U.

All systems are inviting to indies at this point.

Xbox 1 imo is the best controller right now. As stated, controller ergonomics are entirely personal opinion.

PR made you think lack of supply harmed sales. It's PR, encouraging many to purchase the system cause 'it's the cool thing to do'. I personally saw PS4's in, or asked if they had them in stock in my area, they always were. Outskirts of a city of 1 million people.

If there were supply issues, they would certainly be fixed by now with such a drought of sales for the past few months.

Seems a little one sided dude.

Gotta figure out how to set these up lol.

At this point, the first two words where "In 2013" the year is currently 2014.

Personal opinion is irrelevant, I said the PS4's controller was generally regarded as better than its predecessors. I made no comparison of it to the XB1.

Economics allows me to know that lack of supply harmed sales. This is basic economics 101.

Again 2013.

Slow down and actually read the OP next time.

This is an evaluation of the PS4 during the year 2013. Its called Selektive memory, because its making fun of the fact that people tend to only remember the positive of their console of choice.

he never said it was the best controller just that it was received better than its predecessors

at this point for the indies yet PS4 was better at first and those games added up

PS4 is usually thought of as competing with Xbox while Nintendo does their own thing.  Sure they conflict sometimes, but I don't think those looking for a WiiU are by and large the same audience looking at PS4/Xbone

There were supply issues in many places.  Of course it varied by location and country

He said until March not until now with supply.  Stop putting words in his mouth.

The WiiU had already been on sale for a year, is in a different specification bracket, and considered, by many, to be a console people buy for nintendo-made games only, the PS4's closest competitior is just the Xbox One, as it shares the most multiplatform games, is in the same specification bracket, and shares the same launch window.

Topic discusses the console at launch, at which time the PS4 and Vita were the most inviting platforms to indies, Nintendo and Microsoft are now more welcoming to indies but it wasn't always that way.

Other than the dpad improvement, i actually prefer the 360 pad, the xbox one pad, despite the improved dpad, feels cheaply made.
Dualshock 3 kept a nostalgic but ultimately shitty design from the ps1/ps2 era that hurts your hands after extended play times, DS4 overs major improvements, and is currently my favorite controller, let down only by it's parralel sticks.

Stock issues were real, you can cite individual cases all you want, there was, on several sites, actively updated lists showing stock availability and for the first few months a large majority of them were out of stock.

Suppy problems is one thing the PS4 will not face this holiday.

"simple features" like DLNA, MP3 and standbuy mode (guessing you mean instant resume here) are NOT things that will in anyway impact the sales of a console. No one goes in and buys one console over the other cause you can't stream movies from your PC with  or play MP3s. Thats just a nonsensical forum/internet problem and not a real world problem.

The only thing that stands a chance of somehow impacting sales of the PS4, is if MS somehow finds a way to drop the price of the XB1 to $299 for the fall and throw in a game with it. If they do that, then they will sell at least as well as the PS4 or maybe even more.

Why not rewind the clock a bit further? Most of this is common knowledge, even if you only occasionally took note of events in the industry. Going back further is more interesting.

Also positive PR for the PS4 began to climb in earnest after the initial MS reveal in May 2013, prior to E3.

The smaller and more appealing form factor of the console and the support shown late into the lifespan of the PS3, were also contributing factors to its initial success, to varying degrees.

Did the lack of supply really hurt it though? Everyone I know wanted it more because it was scarce.

That's actually true, corrected.

You can't honestly say that because you can't don't know how the PS4 would do if it had those features already, and the degree to which part of the audience requests it.

Sony failing to add features that the annouced the PS4 would have or delaying to long will definetly hurt the image of the console even if its small as you claim.

However, the point of this thread isn't simply to discuss sales. Its an evaluation of both the postives and negatives, something that can be skewed when recalling things with Selective Memory.

heck let's look at all the rumors of the super powerful Nextbox and the late arriving PS4 that everyone thought would miss 2013 altogether
